Flush that Win 98 thought.

I will never flush my thought that is based on the downright truth with regards to that piece of crap called Win98.

It is even more discouraging that anyone would considering using that piece of crap in Win95/98/ME to run a server. That's just insanity.

Win98 is an even bigger piece of sh*t for trying to use as a server.

I am gonna have to consider this an extension of the other thread.

Win9X isn't the greatest, but it isn't nearly as bad as you make it.

Apparently you never knew how to use it correctly????????????

Like I stated in the other thread, I prefer Win XP Pro, but I can still use Win9X and it runs fine for me. You must be doing something wrong to bash it so much.....

regardless of feelings one way or another, this is NOT a good idea. Win9x was arguably an ok Home OS in it's day (prior to 2k Pro) but in this situation, based on it's abilities, it's konwn problems, it's security and support status, this is just a bad bad idea. If windows 98 is what your admin says you should use, it's time to find a new admin.

Exactly!! Any admin who says you should use Windows 98 for running a server is an idiot who doesn't know what they are talking about!! They should be fired.

Get a grip. Folks who frequent these forums know that Win98 is not suitable for networking. A business that is trying to link more than 10 computers using Win98 doesn't HAVE an admin. Most likely the urge to save a few bucks now is greater than the owners wish to avoid problems down the line. So, the short answer to the ORIGINAL post is yes Win98 can be installed on the Vaio. So, as much fun as it is to bait Link19, the post is not about the suitability of Win98 for networking but can it be done.

this is what you should have stated in the first place...instead of your incoherant ramblings about Win98 being a "POS".

YES..using Win98 as a server is a bad idea..but it can be done and even with fair results, I wouldn't use Win98se anymore...WinXP PRO does a better job for me...but I have used Win98SE as a server many many times in the past with out any problems.

can I use my little geo metro to pull a 22 foot dual slide out fith wheel camper? technically, yes. I can get a 5th wheel hitch on there, and even get moving probably. Is it ideal, is it a "good" solution? no. Making suggestions and helping someone to avoid future posts because they have bolted a huge camper (shared database) to a geo metro (win98).

Is this database locked to a Microsoft OS? If you just need to read/write to the file then perhaps Samba on a BSD or linux machine would be better.

yeah well i don't run this show, and the guy that does knows 300 times more than i do....he's been doing it for a long time, sure he knows all that ya'll have said. don't know why its on a 98, maybe cost?

Seriously, if cost is a huge concern, bring in Linux/BSD, unless it's something that needs to run on a Windows platform, in which case you guys should just bite the bullet and shell out some cash for Win2K3 Server, if you buy an OEM license it really isn't that expensive.
Think about it, a customer database is typically a rather important thing for a business, and you're going to run it on a system that is:
- Not a server OS to begin with, sure it can act as one, but that was never it's intended purpose
- Will be out of support very shortly
- Can't use any "proper" filesystem, FAT32 is good enough for home user type stuff, but it lacks security and stability features that NTFS/Ext3/UFS/Just about any other FS has.
- Doesn't have a proper security model to begin with
- Probably isn't supported on your hardware
- Will lack stuff like AV solutions, etc, simply because no one makes software tailored for it any more

Basically, it is just idiocy, to be blunt.
Tell whoever is holding the wallet to think long term instead of next-week term.
