Win XP quick format is a lot quicker than the 2k format. Not sure why, but it also does it in a different way (works fine though).

I had a messed up HDD that I couldn't format/reformat/wipe with Partition Magic 7 or Win 2k format thing, stuck in an XP disk and did quick format and it worked fine, and I could finally use the HDD again.

It's just XP has a different way of formatting to 2k and it does it much quicker. And on a new machine, the actually installation (copying files etc) is quick anyway.

And I thought he was complaining! I reloaded a box (Dell 8300, bad HD) yesterday with xP Pro, joined it to the domain, installed Office xP and a few other apps, plus configured email within an hour. I'm getting faster and faster at doing this :p

BTW, this is definately the wrong forum for this.

The only difference between the Quick Format and Normal Format is the "Quick" Format does not check the disk surface for errors. THAT is what takes so long in the normal format.

If you are installing on a disk you are not familiar with, use the normal format. If you are reinstalling on a disk you know is sound, use the quick format.

And Quick Format has existed since the DOS days, Lonyo, it is not something new with XP.

Partition off a part of your drive for your OS and it will go even faster. I have a 15 gig partition for the os and it takes me about 20 min or less to do a fresh install.
