If you have a win 98 startup disk, you should be able to boot from it, type fdisk, and then delete the logical drives in the extended partition if you have one, then the extended partition, and then the primary partition. Once this is done you should be good to go.

I don't have a win 98 startup disk sadly...

Is there somewhere that I can go without going into windows to total wipe/ reformat the harddrive for a clean win install?

Go here and make boot disks
http://www.bootdisk.com/

Use a 98 disk to boot the computer. Run fdisk and delete the partition on C drive. You can then use your XP cd to format and install.

It's frustrating when the XP cd will not let you refomat your HDD. Wonder what logic MS used when they configured it that way. Another of their my-way-or-the-highway approach :disgust:

Why don't you just use the CD key you have? You realize that they don't embed unique keys in every Windows CD, right?

download (insert HD manufacturer's name here) hard drive tools, most of them have a write 0's or quick format options from a floppy.
