Installed Ram Backwards

Believe it or not I actuall installed my ddr2 800 ram backwards

couldn't figure out why it would not post, and why the ram was VERY hot.

well I switched them around and now everything seems to work fine.


how badly could I have damaged my ram by doing this?
The system only ran for a min or 2 at a time before I figured it out.

How? I just don't understand how you got them in backwards.

Anyway you're lucky it still works, I'd run memtest86 for a few loops and make sure there are no minor errors you haven't noticed yet.

Anyway you're lucky it still works, I'd run memtest86 for a few loops and make sure there are no minor errors you haven't noticed yet.

have not installed ram in years

installed it while mobo was in the case and couldn't see that well

but HOW!!!! I mean, physically, thats not easy... I can understand if you would try it backwards, but it didn't go in, so you take it out and realize you were trying backwards. but to actually get it in there? Oh well, sounds like no permanent damage.
 
I agree...how? Installing the RAM backwards would mean either destroying the slot on the motherboard by bashing through the key divider, or, slicing a notch into your RAM stick? They physically won't fit in the slot backwards, so I'm curious as to how you did that without killing your board, RAM or both?

exactly...it's impossible to install backwards unless you broke it in the process.

The only thing I can think of is that when you installed the sticks you didn't get them fitted 100% into the socket.
 
It's actually possible to install it backward. It wouldn't seat quite all the way, but gets pretty darn close. I've done it once, but I caught it before I turned it on.

I only had time to run one pass and it didn't error


but



I had the memory in the other 2 slots when it was backwards

I am gonna swap it back to those slots the right way and test it again

Is it possible to have damaged the slots?
 
As suggested, I would definitely run Memtest for a while just to make sure they are alright. I have actually installed RAM backwards at one point two, but when it didn't go in, I realized it and turned them around. 😛
 
I have almost attempted to install RAM backwards a couple of times. I always double check the orientation, so caught it both times. Anyways, sounds like no harm done, so thats good, lesson learned.
