i just got upgraded to an amd64 3200+ and gigabyte kb series mobo. since i upgraded, my computer crashes during the boot process (shortly after my desktop comes up and programs begin loading).

i have 3 sticks of ram (2 x 256, 1 x 512). 1 of the 256 sticks works no matter what slot i put it in (thus how i'm typing this post). the other 2 sticks cause the above crashing if they are in, no matter what slot they are put in.

this ram was working perfectly fine before i switched out my parts and i have no idea why 2 of the sticks would randomly start crashing.

it should be noted that i haven't been able to format/reinstall windows yet (discs are in austin), could that have an effect on the situation? i put in my parents windows disc just to see if i could format the drive and get it prepped for reinstall, but with the sticks of ram in setup just crashes.

*sigh* i have horrible luck with computers🙁

ok so i tried the sticks of ram in my parents computer (amd1600+ and biostar mobo) and the freaking things work fine.

on top of that, i tried their ram in my new setup, and i got a beep code that apparently means DRAM error. now, when i try to put in the 256 stick that works i get the same error!!!

could this be a bad motherboard???

i sent an email to their tech support, and their reply was to get certain brands of ram (that they listed) and then to change the voltage. unfortunately, 2 ram sticks i tried were ones that they recommended and they still did not work. furthermore, the computer still won't load and gives the DRAM error beep code.

is it *possible* that the ram slots on the board are bad? RMA'ing this thing to newegg wouldn't be too hard.

for now i reinstalled my old mobo/cpu and every ram stick is working fine.
 
Check your command rate of your ram in your BIOS. If you are using 3 sticks of ram, you'll have to put it on 2T. It's probably on 1T.

yeah i tried invididual sticks alone. still crashed. doesn't make any sense to me.
 
i can't find anywhere in the bios to change the memory settings. it's award bios.

also, i just noticed the bios reports my cpu temp as 91C. that can't be right, can it?
 
this bios is seriously terrible🙁 i have searched and research. the only thing that even mentions memory is where it lists how much memory you have.
 
Try using a mem divider. Maybe your running slower Ram and need to get out of 1:1..... Try 5:4 or something like that.
 
Well, I don't think its ever a good idea to mix RAM. Some ppl do it, but to me RAM is to cheap to mix. If I were you I'd just buy a gig of value RAM on newegg for about 70-80$ and use the 256 mb until that came.

BTW If I were you I'd download http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php and find out what speed all of your mem is. If you posted that info someone, including myself, could prob help more.

Also that CPU temp is way off (or I hope it is). Your CPU should be no higher than 55C It shoukld be more like arouind 36 C- 45C

Make sure you used the 4 pin power cable as well as the 20 pin. When I first upgraded from Socket A I forgot to do this. (Always assumed it was just for intel systems). Drove me nuts. Plus I just got reminded by someone while I was troubleshooting another system.
 
yeah that connector has definitely been connected. i tried booting without it connecting and the computer just didn't do anything.
 
This isn't odd. It just happens that your new motherboard does not like those particular pieces of RAM. This happens quite a bit, and you happen to "lucky" that one of yours works.

I would just sell off the RAM, pick from the verified RAM on your mobo's website, and buy some of that and it should work peachy. Also make sure you have the slots correct (in the manual).

When doing a mobo/CPU install, you should reformat and reinstall windows for optimal performance.

the ram slot worked with 1 stick (a random generic brand, not one of their recommended), but now that ram doesn't work in any slot, either. i get the DRAM error with everything i throw at the machine.
