Installed new hard drive, now it runs slower!!!

Well I upgraded from a 20gb 4200 rpm travelstar to a 80gb 5400 rpm, and now my laptop (Sony Vaio FX series) runs slower! Any suggestions? I know this is broad, but I am relatively new to the upgrade game so go easy on a brother (lol). Thanks in advance.

The only thing I can think of is: Is your new harddrive really fragmented? Perhaps run it through norton speed disk or similar. Also, check for spyware/malware.

You're on NTFS, right? Check the DMA/PIO mode of the drive in Device Manager. Defragment if necessary, as Tiamat says. You didn't give many specifics. How did you notice it was slower, and how much slower is it? Does your drive make any strange noises? How'd you do the upgrade: format and a clean install, or what?

Yes NTFS. Will Defrag when I get home. It was slower loading programs, running games, everything. As the processor thinks, it does make a "ticking" sound. Just popped the sucker in! First time install.....
