Installed Linksys wireless card in PC--good signal, slow internet

I just installed a Linksys wireless card into my PC a few days ago. The installation went smoothly, but I'm not getting a very good conection to the internet. Sometimes the internet will run pretty fast, but most of the time it's slower than what a direct cable connection would be. Especially in games I notice this (quite a bit of lag), and while downloading more than one thing/uploading stuff.

The computer upstairs where the access point is (connected directly to our Comcast connection) runs fine and fast.

Can anyone tell me why my connection is so slow?

Thanks.

I would suggest that you check the networks in your area and figure out which channel others are on. After doing that change your channel to one that no one has to prevent interferance. If this doesnt work get yourself a USB adapter such as the Netgear WG111. It is amazing. Im about 40 feet away from the router and i have Excellent signal.!!!

It's common to have good-to-excellent signal *STRENGTH* and still have poor signal QUALITY.

Signal quality is more important than the strength.

As the first responder posted, get Netstumbler (it's free), run it, then choose a channel (1, 6, or 11 is best if you're in North America) that has the least traffic and interference.

If you also have 2.4G cordless phones, move it/them away from your computer and / or access point.

Channels 1, 6, and 11 are far enough apart in the spectrum that they do not overlap. If you were to choose, say channel 4, then you're prone to interference from folks that are using channels 1 and 6 (and, of course, you'll be interfering with them as well).

Good Luck

Scott
