I just installed a graphics card I had lying around into my PC. When I do so I get no picture. Not even during boot up.

Graphics card is a EVGA Geforce GTX950.

Motherboard is: Z68A-GD80 (G3) with the latest available BIOS which is version 19.2

My PSU is a Corsair RM 550X.

Operating system is Windows 10.

Monitor is plugged into the mainboard HDMI port.

If I remove the graphics card the pc boots up fine (i.e. video feed to the monitor)

While searching online for possible solutions I came across the suggestion to disable the Intel graphics drivers. The workflow suggested was:

1. Turn off the computer and unplug
  1. Remove Graphic card
  2. Plug the monitor to your video output
  3. Turn on the computer
  4. Click on start and type msconfig
  5. Select the Boot tab and click on the box that says Safe boot with minimal selected.
  6. Apply then click ok.
  7. DO NOT RESTART.
  8. Shut Down computer and unplug
  9. Install Graphic card
  10. Turn on the computer (should boot into safe mode)
  11. Go into Device Manager
  12. Expand Display Adapter
  13. Disable the Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 driver. (DO NOT UNINSTALL)
  14. Click the start button and type msconfig
  15. Unclick Safe boot
  16. Restart

But I only get as far as point 10.

At point 11 my PC will not show any picture in the monitor when turned on. Not even during boot up.

I am at a loss on what to do to get this working.

When you say "mainboard HDMI port", do you mean motherboard HDMI out? If so, you need to plug in the monitor cable into GTX950 as that should be primary video output.

Monitor is plugged into the mainboard HDMI port.

There is your problem. Your monitor needs to be plugged into the graphics card itself to get video output from it. You cannot get output from a discrete card on the IGP/mainboard provided ports. (Some laptops with discrete GPUs can, but they're rigged for it)

From the sound of it, your mainboard has already disabled the IGP. If you want the IGP enabled (F.x. for Intel QuickSync) there should be a BIOS setting to force enable it. You'll have to refer to your mainboard manual as to where in the BIOS.

I remember the good old days when they were just add-on cards and you always had to use your original output.
