I installed a raptor, and it doesn;t seem to be running any faster than my 7200RPM hdd, how can i detect and fix this

This sounds more like a Software problem than something for General Hardware.

I used to use 2 in raid o. Than I sold them and got a 16 mb buffer 7200 and it seemed faster.
Now they have the Raptor 16 mb buffers they must be real fast.

Which Raptor did you get?

My new 250GB WD drive with 16MB cache is considerably faster than my 36GB Raptor, and it's very close in performance to the 74GB Raptor.

You pay three times as much per megabyte on the Raptors and you get maybe 25% faster performance (if you're lucky).

Can you personally detect the difference between 8 and 12 millisecond access times?

Considering the cost/performance of both PATA/SATA drives these days, Raptor's aren't really worth the premium...

What exactly have you been doing with the drive since you installed it?
What was your old drive?

Have you been heavy gaming, or just checking your e-mail? It's not necessarily a quantum leap.

imo yes. i noticed the difference going from 7.2k to scsi 10k and to scsi 15k. i am sure some was placebo but there is a real difference. i am not the first one on a bf2 map for no reason...

What evidence do you have to back this claim? Specifically what tests have you run?

I certainly saw a difference.

Raptors run only 1 speed...10K...there is no stick shifting or throttling them...If it working it's doing 10K

have you run hdtach? do you do a lot of hdd accessing work? you will not notice a difference for just surfing the internet.....

Well, I did before you went back and edited your post to actually be a hardware question...

But basically, if you're expecting it to be worlds faster in everyday use, you're going to be disappointed. You should see a difference if you are running very disk-heavy applications or you are copying big files around, but it's not going to make everything open instantaneously.

What kind of software are you using in order to detect the rotations? how are you sure it's accurate? if this is the case, you might want to contact western digital. could also be your mobo bios, possibly, check it's manufacturer's website.

There is exactly zero chance of the raptor spinning at less than 10k. HDs don't work like that. The issue is more unreasonable expectations of performance when going to a raptor.
