install win2k over a network

is there any way to do this.. i have a computer w/o a cdrom drive and i was wondering if i could get it to install..
 
You could do it by installing Remote Installation Services on your CD-ROM enabled machine, provided it is Win2K Server. This will assist you with setting up a distribution directory to which you can connect to install Win2K over the network. It is recommended that the distribution directory be located on a seperate physical drive in order to prevent added stress to your system partition/drive. But for a onetime deal you could probably do without it. You also need to have DHCP,DNS and active directory configured for it to work properly.
 
There are a few ways you can do this... RIS would work, but it is not ideal for this situation. That deals with images, same with Sysprep... easiest way to do it is to copy the win2k install directory (i386), to your computer, then make that directory a share... then on the computer you want to install to boot from a floppy that would enable networking properties... there are some good ones at www.bookdisk.com from there you can just use the command line interface to get to the shared installed directory and install from there...

This method should also work with win98 I believe... never tried it though...
