My sis decided to ask me for laptop advice and then go ahead and buy a new laptop before i could help her anyway, and ended up with some HP laptop that has 256mb ram, but 64mb of that is used by the integrated graphics.

There is even a leaflet that came with the laptop recommending SP2 - tho its obviously just some 'we heard it will be really secure and stuff' standard thing. Going to their web page about it though, it recommends firstly that you update all software and drivers and secondly that you should have at least 256mb for SP2 (they also recommend all pc's have at least 512mb, yet sell laptops with less than half that, but nvm thats another whine).

She will use the internet, but not much at all and it'd take aeons to download all the software updates. More to the point, i dont want it to end up any slower than it is already (it takes aaaages to boot and load programs, and i already got rid of unnecessary things loading on startup), and i DEFINATELY dont want SP2 to break anything.

thoughts?

If you are running XP you should run SP2.

I don't believe SP2 causes any big performance hit over SP1.

if she will be online at all, I think it will save you heartache to install SP2. My laptop actually seemed a bit quicker with a slipstreamed XP SP2 install... but it could all be in my head.

You should apply SP2, more memory will help the system's performance, but I don't think you really have a choice. SPs aren't optional for security.

If she were my sister, I would install SP2 and another 256MB RAM. I would also make sure that I put on antivirus and antispyware software and show her how to use them.

Install SP2 ASAP. Also look into the BIOS to see if you can drop down the RAM set aside for the graphics card - some let you drop it from 64MB down to, say, 8MB. If she doesn't play games, that would give the system another 56MB to play with, which would give a great boost in speed.
