Install dimmer on lamp?

I was gonna buy some table lamps that have 3 way switches. Can I swap that out for a dimmer switch, without using one of the dimmers you put inline with the factory socket and bulb? Do they make that kind of dimmer?

In theory, sure, a lamp is just a resistor, but you have to know how the circuit is laid out, and you'd have to make it fit (physically).

3 lamps have 2 filaments. It produces the 3 brightness by using the various combinations of the 2. If you used a dimmer you'd have to use a 150watt bulb as using a standard 3 way would result in only 1 filament being engaged, likely the 100watt one.

Yes

Just turn the three way switch on the highest setting, leave it there, and use the dimmer to change brightness.

BTW-don't try this with a florescent bulb.
