I get partway through the installation and I get a black screen. Is this the same problem as with XP where I can't install it with a Geforce4?

Sounds like it. I couldn't install XP with a GF4 in the machine either.

I've installed XP and 2k with a GeForce4 Ti4200 in my machine. There's somthing else wrong here. Its not the card.

I dunno. I tried to do an XP install 7 ways to sunday and it was a no go with the geforce4 in the machine. Took it out, put a GF2 in and it installed like a champ.

If you're getting a black screen just as windows setup is ready to actually start installing, I'm betting serious money it's the card. I don't know why (timings, flakey bios, whatever), but if there's no other explanation why a bare system (vid card, mem, HDD and CD drive) doesn't install the OS until the card is replaced. In my case, Linux installed just fine on the system whereas XP would not.

I'd sure be interested in what you think it is that might be causing such behavior.

Old topic - it was the card, I used an older one and it worked fine. There is a note in the MS Knowledge Base that some Nvidia cards won't work while installing the two operating systems.

Glad it worked but kinda weird. I've installed XP Pro and Win 2k on 4 PCS with GeForce TI4400's. 2 were Athlon based Xp2100's on a Abit board and 2 were on Pentium 4 2.53 on a Gigabyte motherboard. In each the displays were not recognized by the system but I was able to install the OS. Then I installed the appropriate driver for the video.
