Is it possible? Will the 8600 mobo support the cpu? is the cooling enough? Is the socket the same? Is the performance increase worth taking the lappy apart?

You need a 400FSB Dothan, 533FSB Dothans will only work in reduced speed.

So it will run at 1.8? Stiil the extra cache would be worth it wouldnt it?

It will not be costing me anything for the upgrade, thanx for the help!

No it would not run at 1.86.

400FSB Dothans also have 2M of L2 cache as well. They are the 7x0 series, instead of the 7x5 series.

Well it seems I can do 1.4 dothan with 2 meg cache or I can do 1.5 banias with 1 meg cache. Which is a better?:D

dexvx is correct, but to add: a lot of Dell laptops have limiting BIOS's. I tried to put a 1.6/533 chip into a Latitude that uses 400FSB chips and the BIOS would not let me boot.
