Does anyone else here suffer from insomnia? What do you do that you think helps?

Over the years, the lack of sleep is starting to take its toll...

I have had trouble with insomnia for most of my adult life. What has worked best for me is I listen to the radio with earphones to help me relax and keep my mind on something other than work or life. I usually listen to ESPN or something equally unexciting.

I've been using unisom for a couple of days now and it helps me sleep somewhat faster. Or smoke pot...That helps too

If you get 9 - 10 hours of sleep, don't!

Tire yourself, so that you do force yourself to sleep.

One of the national sleep organizations, I can't remember which one recommended the following to sleep. It worked for me, took awhile though, and if I break the rules for a couple of nights in a row it takes a few days to get back into it. On the plus side I don't need pills.

1. Go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every day, unless it is an emergency. Don't stay up and sleep later on weekends because it can take a few days for your body to readjust to a normal schedule.

2. Exercise at least 30 min a day. But not within 3 or 4 hours of going to bed.

3. Do not eat anything within one hour of going to bed.

4. Set a routine before going to bed and follow it every night. That way the routine will automatically relax you.

5. Do not watch TV, read, etc, in bed. Bedroom should only be used for sleep and sex. Watching TV or reading in bed can train your body to not shut down when it enters the bedroom.

There may have been other things but I don't remember them. This is a pain in the ass but the pills make me nervous. I don't follow it really religiously either and it still works. It did take this about 2 or 3 weeks of following it strictly though for it to work. But now it works well. Sleep went from one night out of two to every night.
