No big surprise. But if you look around AMD's site, you'll find a couple minute video from inside that fab.

Very nice article, Anand! (And both you and Evan have an email. 😉 )

Yup, sorry. Hopefully next time around AMD will let us take as many pictures as NVIDIA did. 😀

EDIT: Thanks for the heads up Wingz. 🙂

The combination of the Fab and the Dresden Design Center (DDC) was said to require a $2.3 million investment, with close to $2M already spent and the remaining $300M due to be used by the end of 2003. For an advanced microprocessor fabrication facility like Fab 30 this is the going rate for start-up costs, which is a major part of the reason why there are only two big competitors in the desktop CPU market; with such high barriers to entry, it?s very difficult to become a mass market competitor in the CPU business.
Evan, I think you mean $2.3 billion, and $2B there 😉

Oh and I forgot to add, nice article, shame you couldn't take any pics, but that was hardly a surprise 🙂

Thanks, I'll tell Anand to correct it. 🙂

Exactly why is this being put in GH anyway? I thought there was a perfectly servicable Anandtech Articles forum builts specifically for these kind of threads.

Nice article. But once again I have to ask, "Why the fvck did AMD have to build Fab 30 on the other side of the Atlantic?" :frown:
What difference does it make to you? As the article points out the processors are still packaged etc on this side......

I'm jealous. Pretty soon there are going to be no fabs in North America.

I wish I could take a tour there for my vacation this year, screw Hawaii ! 😀 Oh well at least I have a few Athlons as soveniers. 🙂

Won't that facility be for flash memory? And I'm basing my statement on the future plans of semiconductor companies like Motorola and National.
