i recently built a new computer and it is working great it is very fast and dead silent, one issue im having is the 250 gig sata drive im using seems very loud when its thinking. ive never used sata before is this normal. my old ide was always very quiet. im wondering if its something in the bios or is it jsut how the drives are. model for the drive is wdc wd2500ks

its a 250 gig sata drive, what i would like to do is use a ide as my system drive and use this for storage as i like to keep my system drive clean. the problem i have is when i attach the ide drive and remove the sata drive it wont let me install xp. it boots the cd up and loads initial files then before it gets to formatting page says that it cant find any hdd attached to the system.

this is how i would like it setup

80 gig ide master and system drive
200 gig ide slave for storage
250 gig sata storage drive
lg sata dvd burner

ive tried taking everything out but the 80 gig and the sata burner and still get the same thing cant detect hdd on install.

is there something in the bios that needs to be changed. im new to sata so i havent really changed much in the bios its still set to ide mode not ahsi as im not sure what that does.

also is it a bad idea to be using ide as master with sata?

motherboard is a gigabyte 965p with an e4300 and 2 gigs of ram

any input would be great

Interesting. I have the same board. Make sure you set all IDE channels(channel 0 to 5) as Auto in the BIOS (in the Standard CMOS Features page). Also, make sure that the BIOS sees the 80GB hard drive before you install windows. Check simple stuff like IDE cable, power, jumper settings, etc.

yeah ive checked the bios

ide channel 0 master is the sata dvd burner
ide channel 4 master is the 80 gig ide hooked up to the end of the ide cable and drive is set to master

it shows up on post i can boot the dvd but shuts down after loading the inital files and says no hdd attached, just tried it again and got the same thing. should i be pressing f6 on install and installing any drivers?

You can try pressing F6 and load the ide driver; however, I don't think that this is the case. Try going into Advanced BIOS Features. In the Hard Disk Boot Priority, check to see if IDE is first instead of SATA or RAID. Good Luck!

nah no good everything looks fine but still a no go on xp. ill keep scouring the net looking for info

thanks
for the help

Go into boot order, change 1st boot device to hard disk. Press enter on this option and select your IDE drive out of the detected hard disks.

Yesterday I hooked up a spare 300GB IDE drive to the JMicron IDE controller and it worked fine without any drivers. But I haven't tried setting up the IDE as my system drive. I have seen lot of folks have issues with this. Wish I knew before I bought the board.

Have you tried loading the drivers using a floppy during XP installation, like other poster metioned?

no ive tried everything but loading the drivers off a floppy i guess ill try that next

if i hook the ide drives up just to use as storage they work fine

well i tried the driver off floppy and as i suspected got the same results, guess ill just sit around and wait for gigabyte to get back to me. do they have a tech line or is it only through email they will troubleshoot?
