So I just bought this router from Fry's for 50 dollars. I am wondering if this was a good buy for this price. I could have gotten a D link 624 router instead but decided to try something new. What do you guys think? Is the Linksys WRT54G a good gaming router, and reliable for a 2 story apartment?

Actually, no. WRT54G's made recently are all crappy half-assed versions that use a crippled OS. You can still install DD-WRT, but you have to use the Micro version which has far less features.

The WRT54GL are the real gems now. Same stuff as the older versions of the WRT54G, so you still get the crapload of features from the regular version of DD-WRT.

PS: I use DD-WRT on my v3 WRT54G router ;)

You didn't get that good of a deal. Best Buy was selling them for as little as $35 a while ago. But as far as quality goes, it's a fine router.

Ah ok, yeah, I been reading alot of reviews and the reviews has been very mixed. So I decided to go to the place where I trust, which is here. Thanks for your input guys. Kind of sucks to hear about the bestbuy deal but as long as I'm not getting ripped off. Thanks for the input guys!

There's nothing wrong with that router, it's just not customizable like some of the other versions are. I have the wrt54gl which you can customize, but I haven't had a need to. A lot of the reviews you see of people complaining are because Linksys took the premium router name and changed it to a basic router without as much customization potential. There's nothing wrong with the unit, but it was kind of disingenuous of Linksys to handle the product model numbers in the way they did.
