This is why I only support the death penalty if their is overwhelming evidence. None of that shakey witness testimony crap. People lie, they're useless. And when the prosecution makes the crime look particularly heinous, the jury doesn't always look at things objectively...they're horrified and out for blood. And since the guy in shackles is the most likely suspect their clouded judgement goes for his.

It is a shame the wrong person was put to death. However, it was pretty clear he was a low-life anyway. Gun toting gang member, auto-theft ring, etc. It was just a matter of time before he would have probably been found dead in the streets anyway.

I would say the police are somewhat more at fault. The witness was an idiot for being so trusting of the cops, but the cops should've known better.

It's an American/Iranian/Commie Chineese/North Korean thing. In this important and fundamental metric of civilization, those societies come up small.

Of course, only we Americans also have a feverishly huge "no zygote left behind" lobby. They call themselves "pro-life. Many are amongst the staunches political defenders of the death penalty. So we are still unrivaled based on hypocrisy.

I'm 100% against both.

Not saying some people don't deserve to die or anything but can we ever be 100% sure? I read lots of stuff on crime and punsihment (after mysteries it's my fav genre) , mostly books by prosecutors and judges - many talk about justice taking a back seat to professional scorecard and innocents getting convicted with alarming regularity. Also that there is a perception of "guilty until proven innocent" by many jurors instead of the other way around as it was designed. I have come to the conclusion if ever charged with a crime I'd let judge decide my case instead of laymen - too risky.
