So wait... he gets rear-ended, gets out of the car, is walking around and talking to the other driver, and then passes out because his neck is broken? How could that not have affected him like RIGHT AWAY????? That's messed up.

Theisen had been rear-ended March 22 and was exchanging insurance information with the other driver. To avoid walking in heavy oncoming traffic, Theisen had stepped between concrete barriers when he felt weak.

is it just me or is that really hard to understand?

And this illustrates why it is a good idea to get a medical look-over after being involved in a motor vehicle accident (either on-scene by EMTs if they are called or by going to doctors office/emergency room if not). Even if you "feel OK" there may be problems that don't materialize immediately.

(Why do you think NASCAR, CART, IRL, and all forms of motorsports make it MANDATORY for a check-up afetr a wreck?)

Wife passed by twice
Worried that he had been carjacked, Theisen?s wife drove past the area twice. He was on his side, staring at a concrete wall, his shouts inaudible to passing traffic.

Doctors later determined that Theisen had broken his neck and suffered a spinal cord injury.

Theisen had been rear-ended March 22 and was exchanging insurance information with the other driver. To avoid walking in heavy oncoming traffic, Theisen had stepped between concrete barriers when he felt weak.

?He thought he was having a heart attack or a stroke,? said Rodeffer-Theisen. ?He grabbed the concrete barrier and just went down.?

Police wrote an accident report after Theisen disappeared, saying he had walked away from the scene, his wife said. She said the tow truck driver who hauled off Theisen?s car did not see him.

heh, it was like this guy was destined to spend the next 36 hours staring at the sky.

maybe his neck is broken in the impact but he feels ok. He gets out exchanges info feels fine then turns his head the broken bone cuts through his spinal cord leaving him paralized. As an ex-paramedic it happens more often than you would think. The best advice is to stay in your car after an accident as long as its safe and wait for police and paramedics. They also teach paramedics to aproach a car from the front so as not to suprise a driver into making sudden movements and severing their spinal cord.

I DID read the article, & I had the same question.

If you were out exchanging info & they suddenly dropped, wouldn't you be a little concerned?

How freaking oblivious would you have to be to not notice that?

from the article:
Police wrote an accident report after Theisen disappeared, saying he had walked away from the scene, his wife said. She said the tow truck driver who hauled off Theisen?s car did not see him.

Obviously somebody DID call the cops, and since the article only says that the accident report states that Theisen disappeared, it seems like the other driver stuck around.

Now, as to why the other driver didn't notice it, that is of course a totally different can of worms.
