Initiating a program on another computer

Ok,

I have a computer on my network. I want to be able to control it starting up and shutting down from my machine. Starting up isn't that big of a problem, since it has Wake on Lan. The problem is shutting down. I have Shutdown Now put there; but can't figure out how to run it on that machine from a command form my machine. Any ideas?

If it were a *nix, then it's easy. But I expect it isn't a *nix!

Well - you could install VNC on it (that's what I have on my windoze boxen), and then you can connect to it and run it through a normal shutdown remotely.

Cool! Now problem 2 Anyone know if there is a program that lets you share an internet connection just using window's networking? I just want this machine to keep internet access - without a proxy server.

Believe it or not, I use Sub7 to control some remote machines. I just change the port, then pasword lock it. Works great ( After AV is disabled )

I use a program called Sygate to share my internet connection. I don't even have to leave it running it just has to be installed and everything works fine.

They have changed it around abit I think it is now called Sygate Home Network.

Sub7 is a backdoor virus believe it or not, but the Virus functions can be tuned off. ( hence the port re-numbering and passwording ) It works great. You can even control the mouse and get a streaming desktop, kind of like the XP remote desktop ( never tried that tho )

I use sygate home network to share my DirecPC connection... It's a very nice program!

Definately VNC! I have it installed on 15 computers here in my computer lab and it makes everything so easy. I don't have to get out of my cumphy chair or move my chair and I can work with the computer like I was actually at it.

You can also use the shutdown command in the resource kit to remotely reboot/shutdown/ect. You can do time them as well, eg remotely set it to reboot in X hours and send a message to users stating it will be shutting down. Remote desktop is also built into XP and you can use ICS to share the internet connection. No need for any 3rd party software. Let me know if you need help setting any of this up.

Hey, Fornoth, I just reread your original message, and it looks like I've been off base all along. I thought you wanted to shut down by time of day. As far as remote control, if the XP stuff doesn't pan out, I've just been looking at what cygwin offers, as far as Linux commands that run under Windows. The following files are in the /usr/sbin directory:

I've never set up Linux-style networking, so I wouldn't know what to do. Anyone else, who maybe actually has a LAN, want to give it a try? sshd seemed most likely to start.

You don't need to worry about it anymore Sygate takes care of the IP conflicts that I was having - hopefully this box can stay on 24/7
