At the end of my 7th semester of college I got a job; so the last semester was a breeze. In the Washington, DC area I'm making over $50k with a Business IT BS.

Location makes all the difference. There aren't many computer-based jobs around here. The openings that come available are underpaid due to lack of demand....there are simply more computer people than there are positions. I'm sure other markets are the same. If you can get over 35k starting, you're doing good. Beyond that, it would be nice to get over $45 after the first or second year.

In December 2004 I was offered a job at a company that designs and installs controller systems for manufacturing/pharmacutical companies. I'm a Chemical Engineer by major, but it seemed like a job that a Computer Science person could do fairly well (at least the programming aspect of it).

I was offered $52,000 plus benefits (medical/401k, pretty standard). This was east of Cleveland.

I turned it down and went to grad school. I'm really glad I did. I'd have only been taking the job for the money, and that's the #1 way to be miserable in a job.

Graduated with a BSEE in 96. Couldn't find anything locally (Salt Lake City) so took an offer in San Jose for $33k, which was chump change for the Bay area at the time. Worked there are year, and then moved back to Salt Lake working as a process engineer and a heft 1.5x salary increase in '97. More money, less expensive cost of living...a no brainer.

I haven't graduated yet, and I work for myself now, but my last job was $20/hour (~40k a year, I think I ended up on my tax returns as $42xxx.xx) as a sys admin with IRA/health insurance, and paid vacation. This is in the central florida area which is pretty low cost of living. Oh FWIW I'm double majoring in English and Finance and will graduate in the spring. I dunno how important it is to have a CS degree, I see lots of job postings that require one, but I've gotten offers for 40-50k and I don't have one, so I think it just depends.

I had two offers about a month after graduating with a BS Mech Eng (with good GPA):

1) $20/hr with lots of overtime ended up being $63,000 [Pharmaceuticals]
2) $53,000 salaried (but in a real crap location) [Civilian job with the Navy]

After two years I had moved to a salaried position at $58,000.

Got a degree in EECE computer option in 2005. First job was $50,000 per year, plus $5,000 sign on/ training bonus in 6 months, and 1.5% job ticket commision after 9 months(appx. breakout date). Very good in Louisiana.

Oil and Gas Extraction

I now make 40k (plus commision after training), also 20k performance bonus after 1 year.

What my friends were offered in the Boston Area:

B.S.C.E 2006: 71500$ for second shift
B.S.C.S 2006: 63000$ for first ******, 67500$ for second shift

thats pretty darn good. What school are they coming out of?

According to a friend from Boston, its an extremely expensive place to live, so salaries are generally higher across the board. If he's right, its all relative to where you live.

Just like in California. For the price of renting a 2 bedroom apartment around the LA or San Fran area you could get a bad ass house where I live.
