After you got your degree you got an initial starting salary at some location. How much were you offered and what degree? Its vague but I'd like to hear mainly from the Computer Science/Engineering crowd as to what they were offered since I am finishing mine up in the near future. This will also vary with which year you graduated due to inflation. http://www.bls.gov/ is also good for this info.

It's really sort of irrelevant. Inflation notwithstanding, an initial offer for a CS grad in 1998 is going to be a lot different than an initial offer in 2003.

Very true. The industry couldn't get enough programmers around the turn of the century. In the late 2000 early 2001 the industry went through a recession where it was very difficult to get a job.

It is starting to come around now.

Temper the answers you get with knowledge of the surplus of jobs and then the unavailability of them.

BTW - When I graduated in 1995, I started making $37,000. This wasn't the highest offer I had, but it was the one that I felt offered me the best life style options combined with the best experience. I stayed there for 5 years and left making almost double.

My first job in 2003 had me making about $25k + benefits. I'm a CS grad from a reputable state school. A lot of people think that's low, but it was a good opportunity. My area has a low cost of living and on this wage I was able to buy a house and have two good-running cars.

When I got my bscs in 2003, I couldn't even get a job. I eventually went to work at radioshack. A few jobs later, I got a programming job and am now making 42000 in minneapolis.

I graduated in may 2004 w/a BS in computer science. I landed a job in september that was about 50K w/the bonuses. I live in Silver Spring, MD and work in Columbia, MD if that helps at all w/the location.

I'm actually actively looking at the moment too and hope to get a nice sized pay increase. My friend left a little while (started when I did) and is now making about 62K + bonuses. I'm hoping to make more than that.

My "initial offer right out of college" was $0. I didn't have a job lined up. Couldn't even get an interview. Lots of people out of work around here at that time. 2003, computer science (magna cum laude fwiw).

My first job was installing custom closet organizers (like California Closets). $18.50 an hour, later bumped up to $21.50 an hour when I was made a team leader.

I haven't graduated yet, I will in December. I went from part time to full time at my company and was offered $30k plus benefits. I'm staying for now, but if I don't get a decent raise when I graduate, I'm out of here.

First job out of school was $10/hour doing shipping and recieving for a local company here in St. Louis.

Tooke me more than a year to get an offer for a position related to my major (CS, if you're curious). Accepted an offer from Walmart HQ for $46k/year to start the 14th of this month.

My first job out of college was 70K even... I got my degree in: "Management Information Systems and Decision Sciences"

I worked my way through college though, so I had an excellent resume.

My first job was a programming job making approximately $35K. My second job bumped up to around $40K and then I took a couple of years away (living abroad, and then doing some minor consulting). I'm now in my current job for 2.5 years, and started at $55K, and I'm now around $72K.

All figures in Canadian :p

I graduated in 1997 with a B.S. in Computer Science and Engineering Technology. Four months later I had a job with a IT services company. They had to train me for mainframe stuff like COBOL, JCL, and MVS because I got none of that in college.
Started out at $29K then after a year was bumped to $36K.
This was in Cincinnati.

Forgot one: One of my friends from school got a job with the school, working at the IT helpdesk for $33k a year. Doesn't sound like much, but he also gets tuition free now - which is like an extra 18-20k a year :)

According to a friend from Boston, its an extremely expensive place to live, so salaries are generally higher across the board. If he's right, its all relative to where you live.
