Inherited an Impala 2001 which is broken down now. I'm a car noob.

Firstly I want to clarify that I just inherited this car around 2 days ago and have pretty much 0 knowledge of cars.

I tried to work with the person who gave me the car ( he had to fly to another country today hence why he gave it ).

2 days ago it was in good condition and we were driving around shopping and came home. The next morning we couldn't start the car, it was making some click-click type noise so we suspected it was the starter.

1. We bought a new starter specific to Chevy Impala 01's and he replaced the old starter which we suspected was the initial reason.
2. After replacing the starter, we tried to run it but it still wouldn't start and kept making the same type of noise and maybe he tried a bit too hard but all of a sudden the battery blew ( not a huge explosion but there was some noise and a side of it fell off ).
3. We proceeded to replace the battery ( some Walmart brand ) and the same result ( click click type noise and it wouldn't start up fully ).
4. He then thought maybe it's the alternator, he had a backup alternator he got from a junkyard for the exact same type of car and installed it. The car started running, however there was a blinking red message indicating something with the battery, like the alternator wasnt running but the battery was, or maybe it wasn't charged - I'm not completely sure but it was a red message with the battery icon. We thought maybe the battery needed to be charged or something along those lines - we proceeded anyway with the warning message since the car did not stop.
5. Around 2-4 hours later we went shopping and as we were on our way to the gas station the car stopped again. Since the red battery indicator kept going off, I think this is because the alternator wasn't working and it was running on battery power... so the battery ran out of power?
6. We re-replaced the junkyard alternator we initially replaced with the default alternator, and then got assistance from someone via jumpstart.
7. After the jumpstart, the car started working and the motor and all but as soon as the break was pressed, the car wanted to stop and eventually stopped in the middle of the street.
8. The lights and everything were off and smoking was coming out the back. We dragged the car to a street and parked it in someone's space which we asked permission for, and called it quits for the day
9. We came back and I bought a new alternator today, we installed it, it ran fine for awhile after a jump start and then it eventually stopped/smoke, again.
10. We installed a different fuel filter and put gas into the car, jumpstart and it ran for a bit and then shut off or something like that.

He last told me he thought it could be the converter. I'm kind of hesitating to buy a new one since I've already gone and bought a couple parts now.

Can anyone give some insight? Sorry for the long post but hopefully it should be useful for a car guru in terms of seeing what's wrong with it.

The car, again is a Chevrolet Impala 2001 LS 3.8 Liter.

Did you get it checked at Autozone or somewhere similar to see if it was throwing any other error codes? If it weren't for the smoke, I'd still be suspecting something electrical like that alternator.

LOL

Sorry, it's kinda amusing to watch people throw random parts at cars. 😉

It could be a number of things. Is it throwing any codes? Seems electrical related, though. Have you verified the output from the alternator? What is the battery voltage?

Generally a "click" from the starter but nothing else means the battery is dead or the starter has a bad connection.

What kinda smoke are you talking about? Smoke out of the tailpipe I assume? What color? Does the engine seem to run okay when it is running?

lol, yeah.

1. Where would it throw a code? In the same indicator as the red battery message screen? I really should read the manual about now...

2. We aren't really at the level of sophisticated troubleshooting requiring comparing voltages and such. Have not verified

3. I need to find out, I'll bike there and get the info.

I believe it was out of the tailpipe, it was just coming out from behind the back of the car. It wasn't black, just gray/white.

4. The guy revved up the engine today and it was sounding really really good but then after 2-3 minutes it "dies" down.

We didn't get it checked.

As of now it's parked on some street and it's not in any condition, I think, to really drive anywhere such as an Autozone.

Do they have services where they can tow it and do maintenance on it?

This is the kind of car level I'm at to give you a clue - I'm scared as shit to even do jump starting because I'm afraid that shock will blow the car up or something. I'm terrified when the second neutral thing gets plugged in and the shock occurs.

Hard to see where you started and ended but let me take a blind stab.

It SOUNDS like the first Alt MAY have been over charging and the 2nd was dead. The reason the battery blew was it was over charged and then you tried to use it after it blew a cell. (Again wild guess based on what was said). The starter was probable fine the whole time.
What I would do is take the battery back and have them charge it up. Bring it home and see if the car starts. If so put a voltage meter on the battery cables while running. If the voltage is in the 11 to low 12V range you probable need an Alt. If it’s in the 13-14V range then that’s good. And if it’s in the VERY high 14V or even higher range turn the car off as you are over charging.

But start there and report back

I'd take it to a mechanic, or have it towed to a mech if you're afraid to drive. You're going to waste a lot of time and money trying to learn to be a mechanic with a problem like this. You've already learned how to replace a starter, alternator and battery, that's enough for this week. Hang your head low and take it to a professional before you replace any more parts for no reason.

Gray white eh?

Sounds like something you're not going to be able to tackle. Sounds like a coolant leak. Bad intake manifold gasket or a cylinder head gasket.

Listen to kornphlake. His is the best advice you're going to get. I don't put fillings in my teeth, I have the Dentist do that. He's qualified to do it, I'm not.

Where/who would I go to for towing?

AAA if you're a member. Since you know you're in need of a tow, the membership may be cheaper than paying full price for your first tow. If not, I don't really know, call the shop you plan on taking the car to and see if they've got their own truck, if they don't they may have a deal worked out with a towing company that offers better rates for towing vehicles to their shop.
