Inherited a sourdough starter

So my grandmother gave me a daughter starter off of the batch she's maintained all her life and inherited herself from her mother.

I've had it a few weeks and haven't really done much with it besides make pancakes every sunday. To be honest, that was all I really wanted it for (sourdough pancakes uber alles!), but now I'm browsing other kinds of sourdough recipes for fun.

Anybody else do any sourdough-ing? Favorite recipes?

Probably not ... most people don't know the tastiness of older sourdough starters - best example is to find a nice bakery that's been in business for awhile and you know uses them. Pretty rare to find in todays world.

Eh... I guess I hoped with the resident foodies it might be a subject of interest. I guess if it ain't ribeye on a cast iron skillet no one cares. :)

Maybe I'll take some pics of this weekends pancake feast and update the OP with them. See if anybody gives a rip. :)

Mmmmmm sourdough. Man I miss being able to get GOOD sourdough since I moved to NC from the SF Bay Area. People in this area have no clue what good sourdough is.

Good question!

The sourdough starter is a living culture of yeast and lactobacilli.

Basically, you just keep feeding the yeast and lactobacilli, and they take care of any mold spores to prevent them from taking hold. You have to feed it every few weeks, though. That's why I try to use some at least weekly for a pancake feast.

Remember when Burger King sold those little Sourdough burgers? Man I could eat 5 of those in a row, they were sooooo good!

I was disappointed when I walked in and tried to order one only to find that they were no longer offered :(

QFT. My brother and sister-in-law moved from the Bay to DC. Every time they visit or we visit them, there's sourdough going as well. Sometimes we even ship it to them if it's not likely that one of us will travel in the near future.

I'll be damned -- I just looked at fleabay and people are getting $5 per starter. I think starters would make neat gifts to the right kinda people.
