Inherent problems with Asus A7N8xe-DX mobo and Radeon 9600 xt?

Recently my rather computer illirate friend bought a motherboard bundle (mobo + proc + ram) from www.jncs.com (great service and prices it seems). He got the rest of the components from new egg. I set them up and started installing windows and then had to jet and didn't get to see it out to the end. Well he managed to get windows installed and his motherboards system drivers, but he said the the computer would randomly restart quit frequently. This was my worst fear since it happend to me when I built my computer and took me a few weeks to fix.

My question is: is there an inherent problem with Radeon 9600xt graphic cards and the Asus A7N8xe-DX (I think on the asus site it is called the A7N8X-E Deluxe, someone please confirm) motherboards. The only reasons I suspect this is because when I built my computer with a P4C800 Deluxe mother board and Radeon 9800 Pro it would constantly be restarting randomly. Only when I finnaly updated the bios did it begin to work. Am I looking at the same type of thing or is it something else that will be driving me crazy. What else could be causing these random restarts? Sorry I do not have much detail, he is bringing his computer of tommarow and I am going to look at it, hopefully get some BSOD info, and eventually fix it.

Since I believe the solution lies in upgrading the bios I have a few questions about that since the last time I did it was about a year ago.

Please look at that picture and tell me what the diffrence is between the
Awdflash BIOS update tool V8.24B
and the
A7N8X-E Deluxe BIOS 1008
and which one I want to correctly update the bios

Edit: Forgot system specs
Asus A7N8xe-DX Mobo
XP 3000 (I think, if not 3200)
1 gig of some kind of kingston ram
80 gig wd 7200 rpm hdd
radeon 9600xt vid card
some cd drives

Thanks you much for your replys

Is the motherboard a -E? If not, you're on the wrong page, you want one off of here; the E is a different board. As for flashing, the Award thing is the flash utility, "BIOS 100x" is the actual BIOS file, you use the utility to flash the BIOS with the new file.

Thank you very much for your help.

I think the mother board is an -e

Here is the webpage of the motherboard bunle he got
http://jncs.com/content/fb_Asus_A7N8xe-dx.htm

Can anyone tell me what that is listed as on the asus website?
The -E includes gigabit ethernet, whereas the plain Deluxe doesn't. If you don't have gigE availible(the website you linked to doesn't mention it), then you either have a deluxe, probably a version 2.0. You may want to use a program like CPU-Z to double check, however.

I wouldn't start with a bios flash since if it fails because this isn't bios related but a hardware issue your looking at a hot flashing, new bios chip, or RMA. Random reboots are often PSU, heat, or ram related. Try 1 stick of ram at a time and if reboots persist, run memtest86+ as you intended. If using XP uncheck the box for the automatically restart option under system failure in the advanced tab of system properties and check the logs for errors. Also, you forgot to list the single most important system component, the power supply 😉 It's the heart of the system, a weak ticker means trouble. List the brand, model, and wattage. Have him go into the hardware monitor/PC health in the bios, leave it there for 5minutes and report what the CPU temp is.

Since it's a radeon on a nF2 board turn off fastwrites and 8x agp support, and enable vid ram caching in the bios, I suggest this because these settings have corrected issues I've experienced with nF2 chipsets and Radeon cards in the past. Good luck! and post back with an update please 🙂

Thanks for your help both of you. I will defintly use CPU-Z to check the mobo.

About the voltage rails, how do I check them, and whe I am checking them, what am I looking for and what should they be set too?

Thank you very much

Thank you very much! I was not going to flash first, but that is what came to mind immediatly since that is what fixed my problem. I will try all that before flashing.

Thanks alot

Wait a second, you didn't order that board off the site you linked to, did you? If so, you've just been had, big time; I just did a Newegg price check, and the 2200/256/A7N8X bundle(-E no less, Newegg doesn't have non-E's) is $279 on Newegg, and $393 on the site you linked to.

Well it was 512 ram that he got, not 256, and in that price assembly and testing were included. I know it was more than newegg, but he did not want and is not capable of putting the mobo and proc together, nor did I want to do that for him.

Your welcome 🙂 Now get that PSU info from him STAT!

I am pretty sure he has an antec case. So I am assuming he has an Antec or Vantec (said something about vantec on the site). But I will have the exact details at two-ish when the computer gets here

Well if it's Antec, it will get the job done with that config unless it's borked up. I'd begin eliminating the dual channel, heat, and use the recommended bios settings if the PSU checks out.

Eliminating the heat?

If you could instant message me (Sir Starvs Alot) on AIM or sirstarvsalot@hotmail.com I would really appreciate it.
