ING Direct, Emigrant Direct, or HSBC Direct?

Just signed up for HSBC and it's anything but easy. They send you everything through US Mail.. separately. So although I signed up back on the 22nd, I still haven't been able to log in. On top of that, they require you get their ATM card so that you have a PIN... a PIN which you need to establish your bank to transfer from... a detail they left out during the signup process (they made the ATM card optional). So I'll have to wait another week for the card and the PIN to arrive, separately.

But at least I got $25 (soon enough). (check Hot Deals for that).

**UPDATE**
I just wanted to add to this experience with HSBC so far. It is the most painful process I've ever been through as far as online experiences go. Not only did I have to wait 3 weeks after signup to get everything I needed to logon, but establishing the bank with which I'm transferring funds between is an adventure as well.

It's not good enough that you have different password/pins for ATM card and your online account, but you have to establish ANOTHER password for the bank-to-bank transfers. Would it allow me to use the same password as the online account ? Of course not. BTW, the B2B transfers is apparently a new feature for them (it has a NEW icon next to it - which threw me off... how can this sort of feature be new in this day and age?). So anyway, while trying to set my partnering bank to do transfers with, they once again ask my online login of my partnering bank - wow... really ? They already asked this during the signup process. And again, this doesn't feel safe at all... but I enter in my other bank's login credentials anyway... cause I'm not going to deal with test-deposits and having to wait another 2 days for this. Finally, I'm set with establishing the other bank.

While attempting to do my first transfer (after the initial $1 deposit), I select to do it immediately... but wait... it errors saying the entered text is too large! Apparently in the "date scheduled" box (which I am not using) is "01/10/2006" (which I did not enter myself)... I HAD TO DELETE the "20" in "2006" myself to get the transfer to go through. W-T-F...

HSBCDirect sucks compared to ING. You can say most of this is for security... but when I have to account for 3 passwords and a 20-digit userID... that's a bit too much for a single site. If I had been told it was this much trouble, I would've never even started the process. Now I have the pleasure of guiding my wife and mom through all this since I got them to signup too.

Ironically, I used to intern for HSBC (HQ in Buffalo) as an Internet Tester... but it was never this complicated back in '99. I don't see ING requiring so much from their users. Don't login to HSBC without coffee.

I would have to say my experience was much much simpler. I guess it helped that I already had a checking account with them before i signed up for the savings account though. Everything was done within minutes of me signing up, although the one complaint I have is the extra password thing. Which was only introduced within the past year.

Does anyone have one of those $25 ING Referal things?

First person to PM me will get it. Assuming I'm correct that I will get $25 from opening an account from it.

I got mine done faster than 3 weeks. Though I agree, its too much security and more copmlex..
.
Sign up 1/1/06, did a bank to bank transfer. They took the money next business day..

Got my letters over the weekend 1/7, and yes it does come in seperate mail. My atm card isn't here yet...

You can goto your profile and change your 20 digit ID to a screen name.. and password under 8 character.. most my pwd are 10+...

Yeah it kind suck compared to ING.. but i'll take that extra interest.. The only thing i didn't like is memorizing my account numbers.. i rarely use my ing anymore. I also hav met life bank.. its a bit less than ING but you get an ATM card also..

ING is up to 3.8% now. Sure, it's not 4.25%, but it's still a hell of a lot better than the pathetic 1.25% interest that I get from my Wachovia Savings account.

Crap, wish there was more competitive options like that here in Canada. Only have ING which is currently at 2.75%.

Painless, high yield & easy to use.

I've had about.........well...............no................yup..............exactly zero problems w/ them since I started w/ them earlier this year.

Easy to use. Easy to view. Easy to setup. Easy to deposit. Easy to withdraw.

Did I mention, easy??

All that said..........I hope they go to 4.25 soon. It still wouldn't sway me, but I don't see how hsbc could do it & emigrant, not. ING is simply paying out too much in marketing/advertising. I could understand how they might not be able to afford it.
I have had the same positive service as well with Emigrant. ED seems to be very smooth.

ok, i have had ING for the longest time, and just moved some money to HSBC...here's my take:

ING has a great interface, and easy to setup. customer service has been stellar,.

HSBC does take a bit more work to setup. also, for those of you who are wondering, you can change both your id and password to seomthing easier to remember. customer service so far has been helpful - they were able to help me setup my bank to bank transfers even though i didn't have my pin number yet. the lag time between transfers does seem to take 1 business day longer than ING, but i could be wrong.

i have been a loyal ING customer for a long time, and still like them a lot...however, the % difference btween 3.8 and 4.25 has become too great to pass on. i've jumped on HSBC, despite the less user friendly interface and more secure sign up process.

I just checked out the capital one account and they say this - Information About This Rate
The minimum deposit required to open this account is $100. This is a variable rate account so rates are subject to change after the account is open.

what does this mean?

From FW, HSBC Direct is going promo rate with 4.8% through April 30th. Not sure if on all money held there or only on new deposits. Good Luck! 🙂

Is it true that INGDirect.com is better than EmigrantDirect.com and HSBCDirect.com?
