WTF how do you 'pick' - or how do companies 'pick' which term to use?
I think my actual job title is systems support specialist - I pointed out that's really not correct as I'm not a 'specialist'... ok HR says - how about generalist? I was like wtf I've never heard of that.
I can't use director/administrator since at the company I work for, director is a 'management' position - and I am not a manager.
The company I work for has ~300-350 employees. We have our own IT dept (in which I use to work - as a Systems Support 'Specialist') but one dept within the company had needs too great for our IT staff - we told them they needed to hire their own guy basically - so they opened up a position and I took it.
Problem is - the position really holds almost every responsibility of a Systems Administrator except that at this company an administrator/director is management level.
What job title would you pick? I manage 5-6 servers, 15-20 desktops, and am in control of every aspect of that. It involves some 'advanced' network stuff (I've got a couple vlans setup) and simple desktop troubleshooting. (that's all but eliminated now that I've got imaging setup) - all the way to backups.
