Information on getting a new engine

I tried google and couldnt get what i wanted.

The warm weather has motivated me to get my jeep fixed. Its gonna cost between 700-1000 dollars to get running again. Problem is even after that, there are still problems with the engine, such as oil leaks, an antifreeze problem, among other things.

So instead of fixing the old engine that has 97k on it, how much more would it be to get a new engine or rebuilt one installed? What about instead of getting another 4cyl jeep engine, i got a 6cyl jeep engine? Or what if i got a chevy 350 or something like that installed?

What am i looking at as far as getting it totally installed? I'd definitly say it would have to be a rebuilt engine, that would come with a 5 year/50,000 mile warranty. Can i get credit for trading in my current engine? Would i need a new transmission? Its got the stock jeep 5 speed manual in it now. New clutch too???

If anyone knows anything lemme know.

Engines typically come with core charges. So you want to send them back your old engine.

What Jeep, what engine is in it, and what are the smog laws?
You usually want to keep the same type of engine that comes with the cars, though 350/350 drivetrains are common swaps in almost anything, CJs included. (350 Chevy SB and TH-350 trans)

Replacing the 4.0 straight 6 is fairly easy, just remember the crank position sensor.

Ugh. I did this with my Beretta.

Biggest PIA and waste of money EVER. If you're thinking of buying a new engine, you're better off just getting a new or used car.

if you do the swap from 4 to 6cyl, you will need a new tranny and transfer case. What issues are you having with the current one?

Keep in mind that the Jeep 4cyl sucks. I dont know why they ever kept the AMC 2.4L :disgust:

right now i think a piston busted.

but even if i get that fixed, i still have issues with the oil, antifreeze, and a few other thigns i cant think of off the top of my head.

its a 89 wrangler, 2.4L 4 cyl. i know its a pos, but whatever.

what do you think i should do? i feel like putting 10 c-notes into this engine is dumb, but selling the car as is i'd get 700-1000 tops. But insuring both cars, the jeep and my saturn, i save 800, so getting rid of the car wouldnt make sense, b/c the money i got for it would just go to my insurance company.

basically i need opinions.

I'm currently paying $1300 for a rebuilt shortblock for my car. That doesn't include cylinder heads, intake manifold, oil pan, or the labor to put those on, or put the engine in the car. It actually doesn't include the engine block, rods, or cam either, just rebuild parts and labor for the shortblock.

UDT: get a complete 4.0 w/ harness and the appropriate transmission (AX-15? NV-1500? NV-3500?). It'll have alot more pep and shouldn't be hard to do. But check w/ a Jeep forum for a complete list of parts and approximate cost before jumping in.

so u think this is better than fixing my current engine? b/c even if this costs 400 more its better than keeping the problem ridden one i got now.

UDT: I'm sure NotFred's engine is being built to specs that a crate engine or rebuilt wouldn't be built to. I think it ran my dad about $800 for the 4.0 I-6 long block in my mom's Cherokee. Don't quote me on that though. (we did the labor)

Looking again, unless you go to a junkyard for some parts, I'm estimating it'd end up running about $2k for a full drivetrain replacement. (about $1200 for a rebuilt long block, I must've remembered wrong)

Whether it's worth it is upto you.

bah, you can buy a used drivetrain from jeepsunlimited for under a grand. I bought a new transfer case for $100, was just looking at a tranny for $350, and someone offered me an engine block for $400. If you get a 4.0L stroke it and use an old 258 crank and those goodies to get it to 4.7L.
