Just picked up 2 of these at BB (yea i know they suck.. they were the only one's who had them locally). I spend most of the night (picked them up @ 8:45pm) painting them silver to mach my CoolerMaster so unfortunatly I didnt get to test them out. I'm actually on the opposite side of the DiscT@2 spectrum... i'd actually use this time because I NEVER label my cd's and i always loose them and/or know whats on them... so I kind of like this feature. Anyway, i'll post my opinions later... just an FYI...

yea saw that review... thanks though! I am looking forward to testing it out... i'm a bit dissapointed that there was not a great sellection of +40x discs though... although it may have been Best Buy not having them...

Yeah, They are hard to find BUT if you use high quality media, you'll be able to burn at 40x with the drive.
I tested both 24x and 32x CDR's and they both wrote at 40x with no errors. Of course it's not recommended.

quick questions... when I go to burn a disc (using Nero 5.5.8013 & 5.5.9) the only speeds that I have avaliable are 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, and 44x... the thing that concerns me is the gap between 16-44x... am I just doing something wrong or what? I know that my friend who also has this drive is also getting the same speeds as me. I have a bunch of old 32x media that i'd like to burn and i'm just not sure of the OWCS (or whatever its called) will throttle down to 32x. I tried burning one yesterday and I got errors on the disc... no i'm not sure if the disc was messed up before i burned it (didnt look @ it/test it).

Anyway, so my question... is there any way to burn at speeds between 16 and 44x?

nm.... found my answer... for anyone who is interested here's a snippet from CDR Info's Review...

>>
YAMAHA has chosen a rather short supported writing speed list. The drive supports 1X, 4X, 8X, 16X (CLV) and 44X (CAV) writing speeds. There aren't any selectable speeds between 16X and 44X.

Not all discs are created equal: quality can vary greatly from brand to brand, and even from batch to batch. Yamaha's Optimum Write Speed Control function takes care of this problems and makes it easy to record at the highest possible quality for the media you choose.

Simply choose to record at maximum speed and let the recorder automatically throttle down if it feels a particular disc should be recorded at a slower speed.

YAMAHA explains that when OWSC (Optimum Writing Control ) is enabled, the drive will select automatically the best maximum possible recording speed from 8X, 16X (CLV), 20X, 24X, 32X, 36X, 40X and 44X (CAV), as the right graph shows.

The Optimum Writing Control system, determines the optimum writing speed for the disc inserted. The feature can be disabled through Nero software, and as a result, user will be able to record all inserted media at the maximum speed (44X). With OWSC on/off, you can select all recording speeds (1X-44X). When OWSC in enabled and a low quality media being used, Nero will report the drop of recording speed, usually down to 16X

If you read my posts above from 8-3 and 8-4 you'll see that's what pissed me off about this drive. I probably would have kept it if it had manual record speeds between 16x and 44x. Oh well.

ehh... read your post a while back... guess i forgot what you said in there ;)... anyway, i'm OK w/ there not being manual record settings as long as the OWSC works as its suppose to. I tested it w/ some 16x media and it brought it down fine...
