New V.92 analog modem standard

Posted 3:28pm EST Thu Jul 06 2000

NEWS
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) agreed on July 4 to three useful new standards above and beyond the current V.90 modem specification.

The first standard, entitled V.92, wil lead to another new generation of dial-up analog modems. The new features are:

1. An increase of more than 40% in the maximum data rate towards the network to a new maximum of 48 kbit/sec on the best connections (above the former 33.6 kb upload maximum--download speed remains at 56 kb max).

2. Significantly quicker start-up times on recognized connections.

3. The ability to put the modem "on-hold" when the network indicates that an incoming call is waiting.

Also agreed to were V.44 and V.59. V.44 is a new method of data compression based on LZJH compression that offers a 25% improvement over v.42bis. V.59 defines new methods of finding problems with modems and modem connections.

Modems supporting the new technologies will be available sometime in Q4 2000.

I live in Lancaster county PA,representing the low-tech center of America. I'm using 2 bonded modems to consistantly get 101K access(50.6K X 2),yielding a 12.6K/sec transfer rate.

P.S.: I just bought the Zoom V.92/V.44 PCI modem two months ago and have NEVER successfully connected with it. Normal connection attempt sounds for 3-4 seconds, then a an irritating whine noise that doesn't ever connect before timing out. Will sell it to anyone more foolish than myself for $25.
