I saw this at Ace's Hardware: AMD Clawhammer thermal-design guide For those interested, it gives some exploded views of a couple styles of clawhammer heatsink/interface setups.

Interestingly, with the large contact area of the Clawhammer (due to its metal heatspreader), they are reverting to recommending thermal grease, as Intel does nowadays. I think that's good news for the enthusiasts who otherwise have to remove those darned PCTC patches from the heatsinks.

I would prefer my Hammer to not come with the heat spreader. I don't know why people tout the heatspreader as all it does is impede maximum cooling. The only thing it is good for is to protect the core from being damaged from people who don't know how to install a heatsink.

I agree. Adding layers to the thermal path is not optimal for cooling.

maybe they should make it optional lol?
option 1- no heatspreader
optoin 2- yes heatspreader

but for option 1 they would have to put a rule like no warranty for crushed cores i guess

they should just make it easy for people to remove the heatspreader
that way those of us that know how to install a heatsink don't have to use it if we don't want to
and I do hope it is made out of copper

What's scary is that the recommended heatsink application force is about 330 N (75 lbf)!

yeah intel's is quite high too
it can even warp/bend the board a bit

I agree with mrman3k, Unless they make the spreader out of copper it is proabably a waste but for for few idiots who break thier core. (i have done it so I can say idiots:))

I dont know about you guys, but I dont want to break a $300 Processer. Once I get the hang of putting it on with the right amount of force I wouldn't worry. I really hope its made out of copper though.
