I'm starting to look into short throw projectors. At work we're doing a stage production of Wicked that will require someone to be lifted and have a moving background projected on a curtain behind them. Potentially if we can get it working we'll project all the backdrops. Normally I end up on the sound desk but this time have got roped (hahaha) into some of the visuals too so a bit out of my depth. All part and parcel of a school teacher I guess.

My first thoughts is that this would best be achieved by rear projecting the image, but having looked at the stage there isn't a lot of space available.

We want an image about 3.5-4m tall. There is only one point above the stage that is secure enough to attach ropes to lift a person. Behind the back of the stage we'll only have a maximum of 150cm and probably a touch less.

I think you can get ultra short throw projectors with a ratio of 0.33:1 which might do, but I have no idea what quality or brightness they would have.

I'm also wondering whether it would be better to try and do from behind the stage, placed on the floor and projecting up or to try and mount the projectors above the curtain in the rafters in front of the stage. Depending on the space and angle in front we might get away with a normal projector with the keystone ramped right up, but then would have issues with shadows from cast and wires etc etc.

I realise this is probably stretching the home theatre part of the forum a bit further than normal. We'll also be constrained in what we can get in Kathmandu over the next few months so probably home/prosumer grade equipment is more likely that proper pro theatre stuff, especially as some professional projectors I quickly googled rise quickly into the 5 figure price range (and out of mine).

So...I'd welcome peoples thoughts and any experience you all have with projectors.

We'll only be doing 5-6 shows. I'd not really thought about renting but it might be worth looking in to. It'll be interesting to see if there is anywhere here that does rent pro equipment like that.

I would imagine so. pro equipment has different lenses for different throw distance.

projector central has a throw distance calculator you can use to figure out image size and throw distance.
