Infinity vs. Big Typhoon

I'm not really (ahem) a fan of either!

IMHO, the BT is butt fugly, so the Scythe Infinity would be my choice, all things being equal.

BT's work fine, but I get a gag reflex whenever I see one -- like smelling flatulence in a crowded bus.

Infinity's work okay, but they lack fin density, have a low-CFM fan, and no controller -- so, there's hidden costs involved when buying one of these.

Actually there is a newer version of the Big Typhoon out and it appears to be better than the Infinity....
Of course this newer version is much bigger,,,

That was the 'unofficial apologia' in reviews -- the weight thing, e.g. they did it to save you some weight -- but really, how much do paper-thin aluminum fins weigh? Please!?!?!?!

Scythe, at least, built some fin density into the heat pipe area, but the rest of this cooler sucks! The fan sucks! And, they don't include a controller -- 'cause why do you need one with the low-speed fan that comes with this POS anyway, you know? Oh, yeah, they did this to save your ears...

Bottom line: If you're interested in this type and brand of CPU cooler, go with a Scythe Ninja Plus (Rev. B). It'll be available in a couple of weeks...
 
Both cool well, I'd choose based on case airflow. If all your airflow goes front to back then get an infinity or ultra 120 as that suits their fan position. If you have a side fan then perhaps the big typhoon is better with it's fan sucking air down onto the motherboard.
 
Dont know if price is the issue here, I prefer Big Typhoon as it also cools the MB, plus upgrade to a 38mm fan & its up there with the best of them.

I keep waiting for my backordered Tuniq Tower 120 to arrive, but it's getting ridiculous at this point. In the meantime, I'm running a Scythe Mine [pronounced 'me nay'] which, like most Scythe HSFs, is just okay.

If you want to see an excellent example of proper fin density look at the Ultra-120. That's why it works so great!

Too bad Scythe doesn't do this with their Infinity.

If my Tuniq Tower 120 doesn't appear soon, I'm going with a ThermalRight Ultra-120 & an A.C.Ryan Blackfire4... 😉
 
I have the Ultra 120 and I can tell you that it is a great Cooler.

That review linked above is very good. But when it comes to the comparison between the Ultra 120 and the tower 120, there is a difference of 5c in the ambient temperature when the tests were done.

At the time of the Tower 120 review -5c
At the time of the Ultra 120 review +5c

One thing I forgot to mention, you need to do some minor mod on the Yate Loon fan before you can use it on the Ultra-120. For some strange reason, the Yate Loon fan has "pillars" on all four corner, which prevents you from using the Ultra-120's wire fan clip right outta the box. You need to cut away the "pillars" first. I used my dremel. Here's a pic.

I noticed a lot of places are picking up NMB fans lately -- saying they're quieter than 'the famous' Panaflows, and so forth.

Are NMB fans actually rebranded Panaflows with NMB badges, or is this the result of sharing technologies, like when Black and Decker & DeWalt merged?
 
NMB fans are still NMB's, the one's I've used have been very good about noise.

Fan's with the NMB-MAT are basically the same old Panaflos.

Thanks Baked! I don't have a dremel, but i'm sure i can figure out a way to saw the pillars off. I'll use that pic as a reference when the heatsink and fan arrive in the mail.
