Infinity Screens? Help!

I have an affinity for Samsung hardware; it has always lasted a long time (well none of it had ANY problems).

I got an offer to trade in my standard S7 (regular screen) for an S9 minus $300 to $419. Sounds good, but they only come with those lame "infinity" screens that are so vulnerable in drops, and no case I've seen puts a lip above those screens on the side. Two friends I know use those type of phones with cracks in their screens from drops.

Samsung stands out with infinity screens like an idiot (IMO). I don't even know if they come with my required SD card slot, but it doesn't matter; the screen puts it out of contention.

The S7 has been the perfect phone for me, and I have a really old Samsung I use as a (ahem) bathroom mini-tablet. So I'll keep it until the batteries die. No more coin from me toward Samsung phones. They failed.

Personally I'm glad Samsung isn't designing their phones for people who think dropping them is fine so long as its encased in a FUGLY brick of toddler proofing.

Honestly, I don't even get the point of wanting a sleeker more modern device ... just so you can make it look like one of those goofball tablets people get for their 2 year old with a block of plastic garbage around it.

I've had most of Samsung's Note series and quite a few S models as well.

The edge display has has precisely ZERO impact on me thinking a near $1000 device is any more or less idiotic to consider being a clumbsy oaf with.

In other words, I didn't consider my Note 2 or 4 or 7 or S7E any more "droppable" than I do my current N8. You simply DON'T drop these things nor consider that wrapping them in layers of ridiculous looking plastic GARBAGE makes them safer to drop really either. Just be careful with something that costs this much, and is a huge PITA to replace.

And I know I know anyone could drop their phone except I don't buy it. All the people I know who smash theirs are careless with it. NO you don't need to answer that text as you're also carrying in the groceries. NO don't think of taking it out of your pocket as you're getting out of your car. NO don't put it in your shirt pocket and stoop for something. NO one handing it while jogging is dumb. NO don't balance it on the arm of that chair over a hard floor. NO toddler proofing it from yourself isn't a pass to do all of the above. NO the designers aren't always going to keep catering to all of the above at the expense of better designs moving forward.

Exactly. OtterBox co loves those idiots. Me, I use the most minimal of cases and its for grip more than drops. If you know me then you know I get every flagship samsung phone and the occasional iphone (skipped this years notch-fest) and I have only dropped my phone ONCE and even then it was a Galaxy S3 and it survived. And it wasnt technically a drop, my headphone cable got caught in the NYC subway turnstile and the S3 was flung from my hand. Not one scratch. Point is, dont drop your phone or put yourself in a situation that the phone drops. IE putting it in your back pocket while wearing skinny jeans. I snort at people with cracked screens. Snort I say.

You know what they say about car analogies on the Internet...

A handheld device you hold in your hand/pocket != a large, much more expensive automobile that holds you in it.

It is different but the attitude of these people is the same - just don't get into an accident. People use their phones for hours of the day, while on the go and on the move, some accidents are bound to happen. Obviously some people are more cavalier with their gear than others but plenty are careful enough but things go wrong. People who get all on their high horse about it are just very annoying.

The problem with this statement, "People use their phones for hours of the day, while on the go and on the move". this shouldn't be the case in any profession.

We are not on a high-horse. We just don't use our devices like d-bags, one handed on a skateboard or in our skinny jeans.

I am one of those people that never uses a case, and I do believe that the overwhelming majority of people that drop their phones more regularly are the very same ones who buy the biggest, bulkiest cases. If they learned to treat their devices better and with more care, they wouldn't drop them as much. I 100% believe that. I don't drop my phones because I am always cognizant of the fact that it is an expensive, handheld computer and should be treated as such.

Car accidents happen, you can do everything in your power to minimize the likelihood of being the fault of one, but you can't do anything about the other drivers out there, which doesn't apply to phones. People aren't running around crashing their phones into each other, so the analogy doesn't really add up at all.

While there are morons out there that get cavalier with their gear and other aspects of their lives and probably get what they deserve, there are plenty of people do a lot of things in life just fine but little accidents happen regardless. And I'm not talking about just with phones.

To think otherwise is to be the dbag.

This, this a MILLION TIMES THIS.

People need to start treating phones as the fragile devices they are, or buy a tough one and suffer with non-flagship specs (CAT, Kyocera, etc) or ugly looks (Galaxy S Active). These are $1000 glass sandwich pocket computers, you can't go treating it like it's a $150 flip phone from 1999.

I do think the S9 has gotten better with their Infinity displays from the S7 Edge and even S8. The S9 doesn't wrap around as much and less prone to accidental input on the side (though it still happens I've noticed). As for cases, you are probably right about most not having lips around the sides. But not sure how needed that is. Protection on the sides for a typical quality case seems sufficient and there is a enough lip on top and bottom to help if it lands face down. As I mentioned in another post, I got the Samsung silicone case, seems pretty great so far in balance of protection and comfort.

Your probably fine with your S7 a little longer anyway.

There's pretty much no one that drives responsibly that doesn't do just this.

Since we're talking 100% about damage that's a person's own fault during normal use (a stranger doesn't smack their phone into yours and crack it!) then absolutly people drive with the notion 'don't ever have an accident!'

Just because you have insurance you don't go 'hey let me swing this tight corner by this wall without hardly looking... ooooooooh scrape! That's not buffing out!"

No one (sane) drives logically without insurance and then gets insurance so they can drive carelessly. It's not some 'attitutude' that tells people you CAN'T strike *anything* with the car *EVER*, it's actually common sense.

Were it possible to nerf-wrap your car against dings, dents and smaking into things you *still* wouldn't drive any less cautiously.

and then fail to ask a question in the post
Why are infinity screens a thing? What do they do besides making a phone much more fragile than it needs to be?

[I subscribed to this thread (I think with that check-box) but didn't get notified of your response, sorry. I don't see things unless I'm quoted.]

I've never dropped a phone either, but I can't always control things like if an exuberant, untrained dog is around. (I'm more at their level height-wise). I've been looking at the S9's other info. The individual ringtone for texts seems to be gone. Bummer. It does still have the SD card slot.

The case on my S7 is really thin but has that super shock resistant rating. I don't care about phone thinness. It's an odd goal to me.

Without a case, if my hands are a little dry, my S7 isn't easy to hold (I'm also 6'4" with giant hands).

This is my S7 in its case. Indeed it is fuglier than a child born to a brother and sister. That lip around the screen and its relative ease of holding are all I care about.

So only stupid people get their phones knocked or accidently pulled from their hands? Man, you guys know how to tout yourselves.

Geez, what is up dudes? Now you have me in the idiot, careless, skinny jeans d-bag box. I'm 55, in a wheelchair (because of idiots), keep my phone protected in a bag, and never use it if I'm busy; stuff can wait. I can't like nice hardware because I'm cautious? :(

Tell you what, I won't put you in a box (you do that yourself) if you don't put me in a box.

Yeah, the S7 is great. It takes a 200GB card which goes up to 400GB on the S9 (cool, I love tons of storage; I even use my phone for a 5th(?) backup).

Is the AMOLED panel on infinity screens actually curved or is it just the glass? I truly don't understand its purpose.

I don't think the S7's batteries are going, it's only 2.5 years old, and is still much faster than I need it to be. An S9 for $419 is tempting, but...
