This is the first time I have ever heard of a variable transmission being used. Anyone else?
 
audi also has a CVT


putting a diesel's torque through one is a pretty big breakthrough.

Didn't know that. Are they better at gas mileage? The article said a 96% improvement in gas mileage but it didn't say what the baseline was.

 
Agco, Case New Holland and John Deere have been putting them in tractors for maybe 18 months now.......they are very nice transmissions to work with.
 
"infinitely" is the author's term for non-discrete, they oughta hit him for not using the term continuously so they make it sound like it's a new technology!

CVT's have been around since the early 1900's!
 
It's not infinitely variable because there are limits on the total gear ratio achievable by the transmission. "Infinitely between limits" or continuously variable describe this technology better.

Anyway, I was in a Saturn VUE this morning with a CVT, and it is pretty nice although a bit noisy.
 
The Subaru Justy (early 90's) had a CVT. I know because I destroyed my mother's one after thousands of miles of abuse. Well, I can't take all the credit; my brother was even more brutal on it than I was.

A buick in the 1960s had one too. Friend of my Dad's had one.

I thought I was l337 but i guess not! I like the idea behind them but, at least in this case, I didn't like it because you could never feel the power kick in. That's probably more because of the ~75 horsepower engine than anything else though 🙂

As others have said, it has been around for years and years.
