Inexpensive ultra portable (NON-netbook)?

I'm looking for an inexpensive ultra portable (~10-12" display) that has a bit more power and resolution than the netbooks that are currently out.. And actually, a netbook would work but I can't find one that has a better res than 1024x600..

Opinions?

non-netbook ultra portables usually demand a premium

unless you are willing to buy a used one

"Inexpensive" and "ultra-portable" are an oxymoron. If you are going inexpensively ... used is the only way to go. The best laptop I ever owned (or at least my favorite) was the Dell x300, 12" with a media base.

I just bought a netbook and I am (for the most part) impressed.

The best ultra portable non-netbook I have ever used was the Lenovo/IBM X60 series. I was so impressed I ended up buying one but at the time (a 1.5 years ago I think) it was $2k direct from IBM and that was with an employee discount.

I think the dells are probably your best bet for cheapish non netbook small laptops. Personally I won't touch any Dell laptops, especially their ultra-portables, due to too many failures in friends and family pc's... most of which I reccomended 🙁

Good luck!

Ultra-portable, inexpensive, non-netbook is a total contradiction in terms. All you cajn do is go for the lightest el cheapo you can find.

Try an IBM X40 or X41 - 12.1" screen, 60GB and under $400, pluss, terrific battery life (and built to last!). If you've got the extra $150, go for the X60/61 as recommended by Spike.

Amazing. I currently own 2 D630s and an M1330. Before that I've owned 3 other Dell laptops and except for one warranty issue (they picked it up on Tuesday, returned it on Friday) ... I've had no problems whatsoever in the last 5 years. It helps to buy a Latitude with its 3 year warranty ...

I'd say go for the Thinkpad X61s. There was a 50% off coupon a while ago. That would have been a nice discount. Or get a used x40 (though their harddrives aren't speedy and not really upgradeable).

The Dell Mini 12 has a nice high res screen, but I don't know about the Atom speed. The price is also high.

I have an x40 that I changed to use SSD and it's 2.7pounds. I wouldn't want to go over 3pounds for 'ultra' portable. I've also had the x60s a couple of years ago. Both are definitely very nice laptops.

To get more help from us, we need to know price limit and what you're planning on using the laptop for.

I've narrowed it down to the Sony Vaio "T" series or the Thinkpad "X" series as an ultraportable. Keeping an eye out on fatwallet and craigslist, but waiting to see what deals pop up after the holidays.
