Or one of the Chinese tablets . . . quality varies widely.
Something to consider about going cheaper... The Nexus 7 is by far the best value you will find. Those cheaper tablets are a huge step backwards in performance and quality. Those cheaper tablets have displays with poor viewing angles and resolutions, they use really low end processors, they may skimp on memory, they may have older slower versions of Android that will never be updated.

It has one of the worst speakers I've ever heard on a mobile device, I wouldn't want to game on a Nexus 7. Imho half of the gaming experience is the sound.

A Nexus 7 has a high chance of breaking in a single drop and the repair cost is almost as much as a new device. They're very fragile.Since the kids are young (destructive), the cheaper, the better.
Something like the kindle fire would be good. But I paid 200 for mine.
