crap! you are right!

I should have just gotten a taisol aluminum HS instead of the Thermalright SK6 all copper with my T-bird and low-speed fan.

I guess I have a barely used sk6 for sale ;-)

theshamu,

you need to get the 60mm to 80mm fan adapter to use a 80mm fan. No big deal really.

These are pretty much the same with panaflos, sound wise. The Panaflos I have are 19 dBA from 2cooltek

The 60mm to 80mm adapters would only work if the 80mm fan was able to produce the same air pressure against the heatsink. Since the 80mm fan is producing the pressure over a larger area, the noise will be greater.

J3anyus: Regardless of the heatsink type (copper or aluminum), you WANT the heat removed. If you do not remove it from the aluminum hs, the processor will heat up.

Which panaflo model is this? I didn't think they made a fan that quiet and the lowest noise fan that I can find on 2cooltek is 21 dba.

J3,
I guess I was thinking the copper heatsink would allow heat to escape faster away from the CPU, but didn't realize the fan being a big factor here. I suppose I can try and switch to a low rpmfan just to see how poor the cooling gets. But I agree with you, it probably will not work well.

Pothead,
I was think of buying a 60mm fan, maybe there is no panaflo fan of that size? I did a little bit of search, and came up with only 80mm or up.

boa,
That makes sense, a lot of that noise is coming from the air movement. A muffler is really what I need. 🙂 But seriously I hope by going to a lower rpm fan, I can still maintain a cpu temp <50oC.

Originally when i bought it, about 6 months ago, they had 2 versions of 80mm Panaflos. One was the ultraquiet version. I just checked and I guess they don't have it. *shrugs*

I have 5 Silencer in my case. They are really quiet. I believe that the Silencer spreads air out, so you don't feel as much air pushing out when you place your hand in front of it. This is good since you want a lot of air moving inside your case. But I'd go with a Panaflo for the heatsink fan, since it's more directional.

I have the CoolerMaster HHC-001 too. I got fed up with the noise and bought a sunon 80mm fan and an 60 to 80 mm fan adaptor. The adaptor I bought slopes inward unlike a lot of the ones I see, so the air flows nicely. My temps went up about 5-6oC but I moved the sunun from an intake (were I originally bought it to test out noise wise) to the cpu, so I need to get another intake fan to see the exact temp gain. I dont regret doing it one bit, now the computer is quite enough to enjoy using again. My next task to to replace the PS fans and see how that goe

I got in on those Panaflow 80mm fans a few weeks ago. They are quiet, but I'm not too happy with the amount of air they move around. I've added three to my case, and I've noticed a general rise in temperatures as reported by my DigitalDoc. I'm going back to the Pabst I have for case cooling. Since I don't sleep in the same room as the computers, no problem.

As for the RPM monitoring on the Panaflows, yes, there is a third lug hidden under the connector, but my attempts to get RPM monitor were failures. Tried three fans with the same result. YMMV.

paths, thanks for sharing your experience. Guess I should definately give it a try. It's hard to go wrong - the fan is so
loud now I actually am avoiding it - typing this right now on my laptop...

No Problem... As I said the temp gain probably will be even less when I get another 80 and put it back on intake duty. I got my adaptor from umaxpc.com. No endorsement here, they just had the sloped one which I liked the most. I was also tempted to get the one from newegg.com as its has a lower profile.

The fan in case you are wondering was the 40cfm model with 32dba noise at 2900 rpm..

Also I would replace that heatpad and use some artic alumina or silver. I got the alumina and it seems to work pretty good, plus its non-conductive unlike the silver.

Anyone know were to get flexible tubing to build an intake conduit for cool air?

theshamu: when you are overclocking and air cooling, unfortunately, noise happens 🙁 The only review I have ever seen about the 80-to-60 adapters said they stunk. You might try a 60mm Sanyo Denki / $15 / 21.9 CFM @ 28.5 dBA. I got one at plycon.
Best of luck!

<<<Before this thread gets super-long, there was one concerning this in late October I think. Most questions about this fan compared to the panaflo were all answered there.>>>

Nice try MIDIman. Besides, things change, people change....interest rates fluctuate. (name that movie!)

Okay...

How does Dell get their systems so quiet? I seen some with a P4 @ 1.8GHz and it seems there is very little if any noise coming out of their setups. What kind of heatsink/fan do they use? I kinda want the same stuff in my box.

Not sure about Dell, but at my work we have some 1.6ghz P4's with geforce2 cards in them.

Only a 200W PS. Small fan on CPU, no fan on video, and very quiet fan on the PS.

The video cards gets VERY hot, but works just fine. System stability is flawless also. The case is small, but still has spots for an intake and exaust fan.

I had our inventory guy order about 100 panaflows from MPJA electornics, and we put 2 in each box. Couldn't hear the additional noise (over the normal office noise), and temps were way way down.

when i ordered this fan a year ago (yeah they still had this special price) the fan came with 4 pin connector.. so no RPM monitoring
