Does it have to be a mac external hard drive (for example, from the mac hard drives section on newegg?). I was trying to find a cheap one. She really only needs like 200-300 gb one, but if its any bigger that's fine. I would be willing to shop online, but I would rather just pick it up before then or online. I saw the PC external hard drive Western digital 320 gb was 100 bucks on black Friday... but i don't think that would work for her mac, would it?

I want to back up her computer using time machine... would a PC hard drive work, or at least a pc/mac hard drive?

thanks

As Tyranicus said, any external should work just fine. For it to work as Time Machine, your best bet will be to reformat it as HFS+ (Use Disk Utility on the Mac and pick Mac File System, Journaled).

Do eSata HD's work with OSX (Hackintosh, that is)? Specifically, with Time Machine?

I tried an eSATA ExpressCard34 for my MacBook Pro and an eSATA external HD. I never could get the two to work. I wasn't sure if it was the card and some funky driver issue or if it was the enclosure. I ended up returning both to Newegg and bought an external FW400 enclosure and stuck my SATA drive in it. Works perfectly although I'm still on 10.4 and don't have TimeMachine (although I doubt there would be an issue with it).
