my dog literally jiggles the door handle by sniffing it / pawing it when he needs to go out.
if i don't get the picture at that point he'll come over and bark once at me, then go to the door. pretty cut and dry, and it doesn't require jack for training as long as you raise them from puppies.
essentially, when dogs go to the bathroom they LOVE go to in the same spot over and over as a routine, so now he'll hold it for 9+ hours until I can get home to let him out.

In the OP's defense, some dogs do have detachment disorders. They'll poop and shit everywhere as soon as you leave b/c of nerves and such. a former roommate of mine had a dog with this problem (he wasn't the greatest of owners, mind you--but she was trained to let you know when she needed to go out). Poor dog was abused and abandoned as a pup, so never really could trust strange new people.
She'd be fine one minute, do her business outside, let you know she was done, then as soon as you come back inside, she'd be peeing in front of you.

I had a german shephard mutt I bought from an animal shelter - she had been abandoned after being abused when the shelter found her, she was 6 months old. I had her shots done and part of the fee was spay/neuter(always forget which is for which). After I trained her (which only took a couple months despite her being mortally afraid of people beforehand) she was more well-behaved then any cat I ever knew, and could do more. She only shed in the spring, and I took care of that with a thorough brushing every few days. Whenever she did need to lose her lunch she would actually tell me by pulling my clothes toward the door wherever I was at the moment, and she was able to hold it till she got outside. She never had an accident and always told me when she had to go out. She also never chewed on anything once I properly trained her, except the toys I bought her specifically for that. I could go on and on about everything she did and did not do, but in short she did everything I trained her to do and did not do anything I trained her to not do, ever. She was an indoor dog, but yes I did take proper care of her, long walks and runs every day - a large dog esepecially of her breed needs that.

Or better yet, stepping in it, because she barfed right where your feet go when you get out of bed at 2 am because you hear her puking.
My dog eats shit out of the catbox. Also, she chews everything that lands on the floor to pieces. And she eats my dirty socks before I can wash them. She has learned to tell me when she needs to go outside to use the bathroom, though.
Cats don't really need to be "trained" to use the catbox. Most of them naturally gravitate towards it, and by default, they cover their crap.
Also, if you think cats don't have personality, you need to meet more cats. My cat and my mom's cat both have tons of personality.
Hell, one of our outdoor cats is more personable then just about any dog.
then you're hanging around more bad owners. I tell mine to "go to his bed" and he will lay down on his pillow while we eat. When we're done he knows it's time to play again. He's 6mos old and that took a whole evening for him to learn.

Once again...you need to train the dog. Our two rat-dogs sit in my recliner while we eat. They do NOT loiter near the table hoping for a bite.
PLEASE don't have kids. If you can't grasp the simple concept of training a "stupid dog," then how the fuck will you ever deal with an animal that can (eventually) think for itself? Kids are MUCH more work than pets...(and less rewarding!)

My dog's are housebroke and do do anything they shouldn't be. As far as dogs you've seen begging at the table its because owners didn't train them not too or they feed them scraps from time to time so he just goes to where to food is.
I also have 2 cat's and their worse than the dog's because they are very sensitive to what food they eat and changes in the season, so they hairball all over the place 24/7.

Cats can be an issue too, I had a friend who's brother borrowed his car to take the cat somewhere - normally a good cat too, and the cat sprayed all over the car. it was months before the smell came out if not years

My dog is awesome and I trained him to be awesome, he didn't just become that way.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, my dog doesn't eat shit either - he doesn't even try to eat his own puke after he pukes and this is the first dog i know that doesn't. He usually only pukes if its my fault any way, like around thanksgiving we gave him a t-bone and it was just too much for him. Or if someone feeds him too much. He has hardly ever puked unless it was mine, or someone elses fault for feeding him something he shouldn't have.
Also, I should say he has only shat in my house ONE TIME. And granted, it was bad - diaharrea everywhere but it wasn't his fault - he was sick or something, had to be.

hehe, our last dog would eat socks. They would clog him up real good too. Gave him room clearing gas. Poor guy got some sort of cancer in his feet (he was constantly getting tumors and was in a lot of pain because of it) and we had to put him down
My wife and me produced a child a while back and I am about to the point of getting rid of it, the damn thing pees and poops in the house..f'ing nasty little creatures. I don't see how people put up with it. My sister0inlaw has 3 kids, no way in hell.

I just tell my dog to go and he'll leave without any fuss. He doesn't each much though, and I sometimes have to force him to eat. (I'll slap him up to get him riled up...then grab his food bowl...lol)
I've never seen a dog refuse to eat for days at a time. He's been like this all his life. (He is ~8 years old now.)

Nothing like a good butt-drag to cure what ails ya.
Not to mention the fact that they walk in their toilet.
None of these domestic animals are particularly clean.
But I've lived with cats all my life. My first word was "cat." Still no ill effects purple monkey liquid burble blot that I know of.

I don't see how people put up with cats who are so impersonal to begin with. They let them out and maybe see them 2 days later. If they happen to notice they're gone they go hunting for them. What kind of pet owner experience is that?!
BTW, I saw a free cat in the middle of the road this morning. I'm not even kidding.
