Recess is a time for kids to run free -- unless they attend Fayette Central Elementary school in Connersville, Indiana.

CNN affiliate WTHR reports that parents are angry about the school's recess policy, which enforces a rule that an activity of choice be played at recess time. If the kids do not want to participate, they are sent to the principal's office.

One mother, Audrey Dice, made the decision to start an online petition to protest against the school's policy. Over a thousand people have signed the petition so far.

"Not every student wants to jump rope, play kick ball, basketball or whatever is the activity assigned," the petition reads. "They should have free choice of how to spend their recess time! No two children are the same and we have students that have special needs or handicaps and are concessions being made for those children."

Fayette County School Corporation Superintendent Dr. Russell Hodges told WTHR that the structure of Fayette Central Elementary's recess is designed to get kids moving.

"We could help kids understand better how to go along with others and make sure everybody was involved in the activities and that we teach kids the appropriate ways to handle free time," Hodges told the TV station. "We are all concerned about students' health and physical activity so this is an opportunity for a structured process to make sure the kids are actively engaged."

so who thinks this is a good idea? on recess instead of free play you have to do what the schools says. If you do not you get in trouble.

Personally I thin its fucking insane. recess is a time to run to have fun. to even make up stupid games that kids enjoy playing or swinging if you chose too. the school is wrong and hope the backlash continues.

I'd be upset too. School has change so much since the 80's when I was in. I'm very vocal about it to my son's school administration. Kids need some free play time, now every second of hte day is being measured/monitored/overanalyzed. it's really sad, our children are going to have issues when they're older.

Oh? So sending to the principle's office instead of letting them exercise in one of the select few ways they have left is going to make that happen?

Last year, a kid in my son's class was hit in the head with a football (american football), so they banned balls at recess. Fucking genius.

I see no reason to punish kids for not wanting to play or be active. Have a section off to the side where they can sit and,.. read? If they want to be anti-social and inactive,.. so be it. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, to just switch off during the day.

Offer games and what not. Try to encourage participation. But, I see no benefit or valid reason to force them to play.

It has to be "measured/monitored/overanalyzed" or someone might sue them and win. Kid has a bloody nose, broken wrist, sprained ankle? How DARE you let them run around and play!

So to avoid liability, they must control everything.

I wish my parents sued whenever I got hurt playing, we'd be rich.

thats still punishment. this is recess if they want to sit and read fine, if they want to run and and act like a idiot fine, if they want to slide fine, if they want to skip rope fine.

forcing a kid to do something they don't want to is a punishment.

not true. a kid gets hurt you really can't sue the school. unless they didn't keep the equipment up or such. you are really limited on what you can sue for

So why all the rules, they just like to feel in control? It's simply a power trip?

Instead of just letting them go out and play freely, learning how to interact with others, and build friendships naturally....the school is telling hte kids "play this, or go to the office"

Believe it or not, kids have an imagination and can put it to use when given the chance. School is not longer about encouraging such things, it's about teaching to their standardized tests and all else be damned. It's very sad.

I wasn't clear or thorough,.. I meant more to your points - where they can do whatever they want.

Or in other words: Do what we say or else!

sometimes it is just a power trip.

Some schools believe that kids (mainly boys) do not need recess. some reduce it because of to many class's and not wanting to extend the day. sometimes its they don't want to pay people to supervise recess.

there are many excuses. while schools are reducing recess its not to widespread.

but this is a fucking idiotic thing to do. kids need unstructured play

Yeah, that's crazy. Kids should be able to enjoy recess. Except red rover; we always got in trouble for that one.

I get the idea of having to be active during recess instead of sitting on the wall talking and being a fattie -

But... I sucked at baseball... the last thing I want to do is play baseball. But I sure wouldn't mind playing kickball or basketball. I'm not half bad at those sports. So I OVERALL agree with the mother. 90% agree with the mother.

I don't see a problem with a school making the kids be active instead of sitting the whole time.

Once again school administrators are proving that they're the dumbest people on the planet.

Up north here when there was snow that plowed into piles we would play "King of the Mountain" - The game where you try to get to the top while being pushed down from the top. We would also throw snowballs at each other. I think back it was how we tested our limits so you learn not to do things that will get you killed.
