Sometimes though being early is worse than being late, especially if it's like house parties and like functions IMO.

Actually, it's polite to arrive early, and smart. Only really good friends show up early. Ergo de facto, go to a party early, become a really good friend.

If you're really close friends to the host and truly want to help out, then by all means show up early and help out. If you're an acquaintance or a friend of a friend of a friend, then please don't go to a party early but instead on time.

Indians are late? Okay, let me add that to my racial stereotype rolodex.

But seriously, there are so many races that people claim to be constantly late. I mean even my own ethnicity (Hawaiian) has that stereotype. Now, Hawaiians are a pretty niche market. I bet in Arizona you have people applying it to Navajos; in Alaska to Inuits; in Florida to Haitians. I mean, pretty much anyone brown seems to get saddled with this one, and it's a strange one because the actual racial group in question seems to apply it TO THEMSELVES.

I haven't dealt with the Navajos much but the Tohono O'odham and Yaquis are generally on time for everything but nothing starts on time. Folks show up at the appointed time and then just sort of hang out until sufficient antsiness develops and they get on with the undertaking. Often participants will show up on time, see that not much is happening, come back later, and then finally do something.

The Anglos here are horrible about standing you up.

So, is it common to set things to Indian time even away from India? Or did I miss something?

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=IST

The term originated as a joke (Why are Indians late for every function? Because they're still on Indian Standard Time) but is now commonly used, even in India, to refer to the fact that everyone show up late.

I had the opportunity to see this in action a few times. Whenever my Indian friend wanted her guests to show up at 8pm, she'd write "Dinner at 7pm" on the invites. About two thirds of the guests would show up between 7:45pm and 8:15pm. :D

Edit: The problem with adjusting the time on invites, is that this move is now expected from many Indian hosts. So the guests correct for "Indian Standard Time" and show up late anyway.

rofl, ok.

its a typical thing for indians to be late to EVERYTHING..... i hang out with alot of indians, and i can attest to this... nothing ever begins with them until after about and hour or 2 until the function is supposed to begin... sometimes it can be frustrating but whatever..... also, this is common practice for filipinos too (im filipino)....

They sound like my kind of people! I'm never quite ready when people show up. :D

I'm not Indian, but the wife is and so are many of my friends and I am very familiar with the IST concept. I concur with you. It's really annoying, especially since I grew up in the culture of punctuality being of irrational importance.

For example, we meet some of our friends for lunch at "11:30", in quotes because for some that means showing up at something like 1PM when everyone is gone. That's pretty common. I've adapted to it by realizing that they won't take offense if whatever they were invited for is already done by the time they show up. You just can't expect anyone to be there on time.

Having just returned from India about a week ago, I saw the IST concept as it applied to commerce. Shops weren't open at any regular time, sometimes not at all. Returning for a meeting at 1PM really meant just sometime in the afternoon, because they weren't there. Overall, I learned from Indians that I, as an American, was far too uptight and needed to relax my schedule a bit and just take it as it comes.

We put 1pm for our wedding ceremony and people still showed up at 2pm (the actual start time). It's only a 20 min ceremony that's 45 minutes away from the reception place so if they show up an hour late, they would've made the trip for nothing. So we decided to say an hour ahead of what it actually was. Good thing we did. Stupid to have to do it... cause there were people who showed up ahead of 1pm too.

BTW, speaking of Indians, I saw Sunny Leone on Howard Stern on Demand... W O W.

Ah man, the more I hear the more I love these people!! I wonder if they'll be fully Modernised in 20 years. Might be a good place to spend my final years on this earth.

I learned pretty quick to lie about the start times to my friends. If I ever wanted to get to a movie on time I had to tell them the start time was 15 minutes earlier.

Depends on what you mean by modern I guess. The whole country is like a giant anachronism, imo. Selfishly, I hope it remains so because I vehemently oppose global homogenization. If everything is updated to Western ideals (or, at this point, even the ideals of some of Asia's larger cities) then India would cease to be India I'd think. There's a lot of discussion there about whether India can survive without Bharat, the embodiment of ancient India.

I'm impressed with the resilience of Indian culture. The West, especially America, is a marvel of regulation. I personally feel that this will be our major hindrance in competing in global markets. So much of what Indians can do freely would be highly illegal here. We're so restricted in our efforts to conform, be safe that we stifle innovation and open the door to intellectual exports from other countries.

If you're early, you're on time.
If you're on time, you're late.
If you're late, don't bother wasting my time.

She did but they do not look it if you didn't know it. They're only Cs and no marks, absolutely perfectly shaped. Before, she was too small to be hot, no comparison to now. She is so Tiffani Amber Thiessen in her prime, except a better body.

Jews are often on time, but they spend 20-25 minutes "schmoozing" so the event never starts on time.
