Are you fucking kidding me? I get being late. I understand the concept of "Indian Standard Time". But y'all should have the fucking decency to CALL and LET SOMEBODY KNOW if you're gonna be late. ESPECIALLY IF YOU DECIDE YOU'RE SO FUCKING LATE IT'S BETTER NOT TO SHOW UP AT ALL!

Now I can let that slide when you're in high school, because when you're a teenager the world revolves around you. I can let it slide in college, because some of us are late bloomers. Hell I used to do that shit all the time. But when you're 25-30, it's just fucking pathetic.

So if you're Indian, try to be on time for your next meeting/function/whatever...and if you're not on time, CALL AHEAD if people will be waiting on you. If you don't think you'll be able to make it, DON'T TELL THEM AFTER THEY'VE BEEN WAITING AN HOUR FOR YOUR ASS.

I like the late system myself.. I am always on-time in the states because I get your frustration, but things are easier abroad when everybody understands everybody else is going to be late.

Hyderabadi Standard Time is worse. Card says ceremony will be at 7:00PM followed by dinner at 7:45, guests arrive at 8:30, the bride arrives at 9:15, groom shows up at 10:00, first round of dinner is served at 11:00 and everybody goes home at 4:00AM because the bride needed two hours to make it from the hall to the car, crying, hugging and clutching everyone within arm's reach.

I'm American and 10-15 minutes early for everything.

Actually, it's a bit oppressive. I'd be happy if I could be happy being late.

Sometimes though being early is worse than being late, especially if it's like house parties and like functions IMO.

The best is of course being on time, or maybe within 3-5 minutes late. Anything more than that without calling in advance is just downright irritating.

So, is it common to set things to Indian time even away from India? Or did I miss something?

its a typical thing for indians to be late to EVERYTHING..... i hang out with alot of indians, and i can attest to this... nothing ever begins with them until after about and hour or 2 until the function is supposed to begin... sometimes it can be frustrating but whatever..... also, this is common practice for filipinos too (im filipino)....

Indians are late? Okay, let me add that to my racial stereotype rolodex.

But seriously, there are so many races that people claim to be constantly late. I mean even my own ethnicity (Hawaiian) has that stereotype. Now, Hawaiians are a pretty niche market. I bet in Arizona you have people applying it to Navajos; in Alaska to Inuits; in Florida to Haitians. I mean, pretty much anyone brown seems to get saddled with this one, and it's a strange one because the actual racial group in question seems to apply it TO THEMSELVES.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=IST

The term originated as a joke (Why are Indians late for every function? Because they're still on Indian Standard Time) but is now commonly used, even in India, to refer to the fact that everyone show up late.

I had the opportunity to see this in action a few times. Whenever my Indian friend wanted her guests to show up at 8pm, she'd write "Dinner at 7pm" on the invites. About two thirds of the guests would show up between 7:45pm and 8:15pm. :D

Edit: The problem with adjusting the time on invites, is that this move is now expected from many Indian hosts. So the guests correct for "Indian Standard Time" and show up late anyway.

QFT.

My standard chronically late stereotype includes most Mediterranean Europeans. Spanish, Italian, ex-yugoslavs, Greeks...
Also latinos, via Spain.

Germans, Swiss, etc, are the opposite.

lol, its not just them. I had an activity at 7:00 with some college friends, so I told them all to meet at 6:40. On of my roomates heard that and said
"Why are we meeting at 6:40, it takes like 3 mins to get to the place"
I respond
"Because we may say that we meet at 6:40, but most won't show up till 6:45-6:50. And by the time everyone shakes everyone else's hands it will be 6:55"
"You are too pessimistic"

Me, having worked with college aged kids in my area just smiled at him and said "We'll see". We arrived exactly on time, maybe even a minuet late.

Damn. It was just the opposite for me in college. My three main professors in civil engineering were Indian. They were ALWAYS early or on time. They never called in sick, either.

It was a bummer because they made sure to use the entire hour to teach. What were they thinking!?

Indians who work here in the tech Industry are on time as well but that has nothing to do with how they are on time socially in their own culture. For example, it's pretty much expected that in a wedding the bride or groom will be late (by many hours). I guess its customary for them to do this since if they were to be on time, it would project the notion that they can't wait to get married. That I think thats not considered to be a positive trait when everyone thinks its okay to be late. Either that or its a power thing where they feel embodied by keeping all the parties waiting.
I can relate to it since my parents are from Pakistan and the culture there predominantly is from India. I've been to Indian weddings and it seems pretty much the same to me save for a few customs.

This whole Indians being late thing is new to me, in my racial stereotype book Indians are always on time. But like was suggested maybe they make sure to be on time for work related events but on their social time its a different story.

I haven't really noticed Indians being late all that much, but my cousins are. They always show up around 2 hours late and they act like nothing happened - no excuses or anything. We've gotten used to it by now - we don't start dinner before they get here or anything. My parents used to get really pissed off because the food would be cold by the time they got here. Another time, my cousin told my brothers she would meet them at our house so they could all drive to a vacation house on the cape. My brothers call her a couple hours after she said she'd be there and says she wasn't going to come. And she wasn't going to bother telling them.

My mom has to deal with Indians being late to the airport and expecting my mom to rush them through the TSA people. Yeah, she just tells them tough shit. If you don't get to her check-in counter more than 30 minutes prior to the flight, you aren't getting on.

Actually, it's polite to arrive early, and smart. Only really good friends show up early. Ergo de facto, go to a party early, become a really good friend.
