ok that's South Indian films...a lot of them are like that. I mean they had an entire movie about how a guy's life would change if he had missed a bus or something like that.

Most Indian movies are the same - Hindi or regional. If anything, Hindi movies set the trend for a lot of this crappy stuff. Telugu movies were over-the-top period and family dramas for a long time but have become more contemporary in the last few years. Frankly, it's a little more realistic than Superman or X-Men in concept, though in execution, the difference is to be expected. I would say it is like the difference between public restrooms in the US and the few ones you find in India - they are both full of crap, but in the West they are at least relatively safe to use ;)

I don't agree. There are no Hindi movies like Jeans for example.

But there are tons of crappy Hindi movies though...but there are some really good ones as well.

My favorites being: Company, Ek Haseena Thi, Tein Deewarien, Satya, Road, Darna Maana Hai, Rang De Basanti, Lagaan, Iqbal, etc...these are just the ones that popped in my head.

You guys should check them out, they all come with subtitles and are pretty good flicks. No cheese.

Right, there are no Hindi movies like Jeans, except for the Hindi movie, Jeans -
(though originally made by a South Indian director in Tamil and dubbed in Hindi). If you've watched movies like Toofan, Jaadugar and Shahenshah (all Amitabh movies, made only in Hindi, thankfully), I swear it's enough to put you off Hindi movies for a decade or two. The 80s through the mid-90s have a plethora of absurd Hindi movies. Most award-winning movies are made in regional languages. Of course, the better Hindi movies have much better production values than regional movies and for sure there is a larger pool of talent in Bombay than elsewhere. But that is also largely because a lot of the best talent migrates towards Bollywood as it is more lucrative. A lot of these stars make it back to regional movies and theatre to vent their talent which is largely under-utilized in Hindi movies.

What about Punjabi movies? I've heard of that region of India and people there speak a distinct language. I have to read up my stuff on India.

If you have heard of *any* region in India, you can bet they speak a distinct language there ;) Indian states were demarcated by language, so each state speaks a distinct language (though some of the newer states like Jharkhand, Uttaranchal and Chattisgarh might speak the same languages as the original states from which they were carved out). There are also further distinguishing dialects within each state.

Apart from the Hindi, the major regional movies are made in Tamil, Bengali, Telugu and Malayalam, though I am sure a fair amount of movies are made in Punjabi too. However, a lot of Hindi movies are centered around Punjabi characters (not Sikhs for the most part, but Punjabi-speaking Hindus rather), so I guess Punjabis get their fill from regular Hindi movies most of the time :)

12b was based off of this movie "Sliding Doors"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120148/

While I loved Sliding Doors, 12B was easily the more entertaining movie - good songs too. And having traveled on the 12B bus route myself was a bonus, I suppose :)

Most Punjabi movies I have seen are set in a rural setting, have pretty low technical involvement, most like love stories and involve land disputes (ofcourse these are old ones and newer ones have become more original). A lot of music in Bollywood movies borrows from Punjabi music and Bhangra is Punjabi as well.

On a slightly different note, why is it that whenever I hear music like the above clip has (I'm not sure what kind you would call it - Hindi, perhaps?) the sound is muffled and seems like it is coming out of a tin can? Is it intentional, or do they have different recording standards than we have?

Sad thing is that I saw this movie when I was at my parents' house in SoFlo.

BUT, to make things clear for you ignorant rednecks.... that is an East Indian movie.... not Middle East "beloved patriot terrorists"

If you are wondering what is the difference... think of India as the U.S.... than contrast and compare the Middle East as Mexico.

....

anyone see the the simpsons episode on outsourcing to India?... pure gold.
