India has unveiled a $35 computer prototype as part of its program to provide connectivity to its students and teachers at affordable prices.
Kapil Sibal, the country's human resources development minister, displayed what he called a low-cost computing and access device in New Delhi on Thursday. The ministry said the price would gradually fall to $10 a piece. India said connectivity to all its colleges and universities is key to achieving its education goals.
Wow, I wonder how they manage to pull that off. 😱

Even without knowing the specs, for $35 (or less as they economies of scale kick in) I would love to try one out

Do they get that price by subtracting government subsidies? If so it doesn't reflect the "real" price of the gadget. This does seem like a government initiative after all.

I wouldn't call it an ipad or even close. It has no internal storage and relies on memory cards. The OS is a stripped down linux with a few applications. The biggest cost would be the screen. The $35 price is also not finalized, they announced that is what they think they can do it for but they do not have any manufacturers yet.

The screen is a touchscreen and probably the hitach one that is 800x480, those cost about $18 each in 10K quantity. So that alone is half the cost they are quoting.

Probably a ARM cpu , so that adds about $8 in 10K quantity.

So $26 just for the cpu and screen, is either subsidized or they are projecting that cost based on some future lowering of prices.

US already has that. It's called the IPad, but apple charges $400-500 for it

You seem to be confusing "average phone" with "average smartphone".
I know you were trolling, but it's still stupid.

The average phone is a lot less powerful than an iPhone.

Thats not a computer. Its crappy PDA with limited features aside from a nice screen. Aside from doing a handful of basic web things its useless.
I'd rather have a netbook or Android phone. Am thinking Indians want the same.
