Hey guys I'm just wondering how the hell is everything so 'unsafe' in India?

The water, milk, meat, food stands etc?!

What do the people that actually live in India do about it or they are just use to the hygiene level?

Seems crazy that the country is so unsafe in regards to it's food.

I'm sure eating from the average food stand is just as risky with some of the stunts they pull. (drop sausage, hey lets wipe it and pit it back. Seen people drop pizza dow and just wipe and pick the dirt off and then just go on as normal, even saw this woman sneeze over the food and then just carry on..)

drink Aquafina or Kinley water ONLY, and that too buy it from a reputable source. your local relatives will point you in the right direction. Boiled water is good but tastes nastay. avoid any milk that is not from mother dairy or direct from a cow. avoid eating meat there. take a backpack, digital camera, and your laptop/mp3 player. pack 2-3 water bottles whenever you go out, as it can get hella hot and you gotta keep hydrated.

try not to ACT like an abcd. especially when you go shopping. shut your trap unless you have a thick indian accent, which i doubt since you were born here. they'll jack up the prices if they think you're a foreigner.

music is.. pretty much the same. they listen to a lot of british boy bands too, i think boyzone(?) is popular there. They get all the latest music because of MTV India, and V Music channel. pretty good. They have at least 70 true cable channels, so t.v. is pretty cool there, and a good amount are western, like AXN, HBO (yeah they even have Sex and the City there.. haha), Star world, star movies, star this star that....bbc, cnn, discovery, animal planet the list goes on...

eat the chinese food. it is better than chinese food in america. go to Jazz By the Bay in bombay for pizza. check out the clubs, if you can get in. the club scene is pretty big, with a lot of good dj's. bombay is pretty tight, i've been there once. you can go to goa from there it ain't far, but you may be too young for that shiet.. haha. what else.... hmm... can't say too much more cuz i'm not from there (punjab-delhi is my forte).

Actually avoid bottled water unless you have no choice. They have found that most of the bottled water isn't very clean at all.

Koing: to the people living there, the water is not a problem. its us westerners that have the problem, and that too depends on if it is city water. our stomachs are not acclimated to the 'dirty water' Many families have private pumps in their homes that get the water direct from the groundwater. 400 foot deep. That is clean, but i'm still paranoid and don't drink it -- i probably could. But city water shouldnt be drank by anyone who wasn't born there or anyone who hasn't drank it for a number of years. Some of the milk is bad because there are certain groups of India that are real a55holes. There are certain states in India that contribute the most to hooliganism, poverty, and other negative aspects. Usually people from these states (i won't mention it to avoid offending them) are poor, and not only that are opportunists who don't give a sh*t for peoples safety. Long story short, they have made synthetic milk and mixed it with real milk and sell it to people. If you go visit Delhi and see a beggar, more than likely they are from one of these states. They don't like to make an honest living. I say don't eat the meat because in general meat that is not cooked or washed properly is riskier than vegetarian food.

I see the meat strung up outside shop vendors on crowded streets, and i think thats gross. I have seen that phenomenon in other countries though. Of course, if he goes to a nice restaurant, it is o.k. I meant really that he shouldnt eat the meat from anything less than a really nice restaurant, even 'average' restaurants won't cut it. And totally avoid street vendor food -- again, localers can eat the stuff, but foreigners should not. Koing, I don't want to give you the wrong impression with what i have written. i mean the sanitary levels are questionable even in this country. Have you ever seen a commercial chinese kitchen? I have, and it wasn't pleasant. Its one of those things that you just don't try to think about. my friend who used to work at Burger King here in the u.s., now this is gross and i scolded him for this, told me jokingly once he would take a dump and then go back and make burgers - without washing his hands... you probably wouldn't get sick from that though because the meat would be heated to such high tempratures. is it clean? no. but have the germs been killed? yes. another one of my friends who worked at a subway shop (in the u.s.) put the buns of a rude customer in his underwear and then made him the sandwhich. fortunately, no matter how rude you are to indians, they still won't do stuff like that. if they are dirty, they are dirty unintentionally, due to lack of education (if that makes it any better, i don't know hehe). In India, a lot of these street vendors and small eateries aren't run by educated people who know that you have to cook meat to x degrees. the fact is, India is a developing nation, and like other crowded, developing nations, quality control of the food industry is very difficult to maintain. sure there are health inspectors, but they can be bought. and i doubt they go to every little eatery in a country the size of India.

Cliffnotes version of what to do in India: its really not that bad if you look at it, here is what i do: water: i buy Aquafina or Kinley water (just like here in the u.s. they will deliver it to your home, the 5 gallon (?) bottles), and drink from that. I also fill up thermos/water bottles and carry it with me. - a lot of us here in the u.s. even do this. no big deal milk: we buy from Mother Dairy, the govt. regulated source. When I'm in Punjab, my relatives have their own cows. that is as fresh as it gets. Opt for "half-tone" milk. the other milks are too thick and don't taste like american milk imho. people in india prefer thick milk for some reason. meat: okay to cook it at home, when you can supervise it, and heat it to proper temps. okay to eat in 5 star or better restaurants. Avoid anything less than that. (some may say i'm being paranoid, but safety first) other foods: superior to non-organic foods in the U.S. yes, like many european countries, the foods are generally smaller but taste better there. definitely more 'organic' than here. Thank God I don't think GM foods has taken off as yet. Don't expect to find 4 pound tomatoes or 14 inch banannas there, but better tasting, small sized vegetables. if i recall, even the chickens were smaller there. if he follows my guidelines, he will be as safe as eating in the U.S.

a 3rd party independent magazine did testing on the water, and Aquafina and Kinley were rated cleanest. I think he will be okay if he sticks to those brands.

families usually go for a long time, since there are so many people to see, relatives, friends etc...and just because you get more bang for your buck that way...you probably woudn't make another trip anytime soon, so this way you can get to spend some time with your family.

Dude, you are going to a different place. What's the point if everything looked and felt like suburban USA? Try not to stick out like a sore thumb and don't act as if everything around you is going to eat you.

One thing however I know is going to be completely unmodernised is the music

Yeah, there's some bad music back there. But you've got Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera here, so stop throwing stones. If you hate change so much, grow a spine and tell your parents you don't want to go. I think the 1 billion odd there will manage just fine without your benevolence.............and your attitude.

woo hoo!!! finally =)

Let me guess, you are 1/1000000th Indian so you figured you could say something offensive and get away with it - brilliant

Sure, the standard of living is way better in the U.S. But there's plenty to be proud of for those of us that come from India. It's called culture and it doesn't have a dollar value attached to it. If all you can see are the negative things you mentioned above, you are not talking about culture - you are talking about social inadequacies. If creature comforts make a good life for you, congrats - you are a simple being with simple needs. Evolution demands a little more insight than expressing disgust at blackouts, non-potable water and beggars.

Also, if you live in the US, the rate at which your job is headed towards India, you wouldn't be able to pay the friggin' airfare to get there if you wanted to :p

Do you even know where India is on the world map ?

I'm 3/4 Indian so I would hope I know where it is.

then its surprising that you wouldn't know that its very common to make long trips to india, going for a week is screwed up cause the jetlag will blow two or three days off your trip. its very common to go for a month or two at a time.

Hey, I have nothing against Indian people. I'm SORRY if my post offended you. Culture is great but as a stipulation to this culture must the country live in these conditions?

OH GOD!
Reading this post makes me sick. Dude this doesn't sound as a Travel India guide. Its more like a do not travel guide. I think apart from a couple of things rest is crap.
You don't even know what has happend to India. If guys like you last visited India some 4-5 yrs ago, man things have changed drastically. You can get every kind of music and that too damn cheap. Computer products are so cheap that you can't even think.
You guys are literally destroying India's image man. If you are going to a city like delhi then man you will get every thing out there that you can dream of here. Shopping malls, multicineplexes, bars, discos blah blah blah. Wait till you get there. Hit out on one of the bars and man you will feel a bit backward.

You get everything you wan't. !!
and thats the bottom line

i think youre blowing more smoke up your own ass then his. i am 100% indian and india would not be a fun place to live especially if you are not wealthy. there is poverty, disese, graft, apathy among tons of other things wrong. dont get me wrong its ok to visit and IMO indians have one o fthe most interesting cultures in the world and some of the best food ive ever eaten but that doesn't change the fact that the major cities in india are terrible places compared to any other 1st world major city.

Cashmoney995, i would suggest asking your parents to take you where they used to hang out. mine did and it was interesting. Also don't worry about the food in mumbai is great, make sure you eat kulfi and bajhi pau from the guy who makes it on the street (hallia vada sp?) his baji pau is sooo good, and get some cold coffee at creme center
