Does this service degrade OS performace in any way? Does it really improve searches?
Using Win2k SP4 with native (4KB) NTFS.

It degrades performance while it creates/updates the index. It's supposed to help searching because it lets you do things like search on the contents of files without making the search program read through all the files every time.
