Independent judiciary taking root in Iraq

Baghdad, Iraq Press, September 14, 2003 ? A new judicial system is slowly taking root with judges exercising their role without interference, Minister of Justice Hashem Abdulrahman al-Shibli said.

"The ministry will make the judiciary independent of the executive branch of the government and will not let any party meddle in its affairs," Shibli, who was given the justice portfolio when the first post-Saddam cabinet was announced on September 1, said.

"We seek justice for the whole Iraqi people regardless of religious, sectarian or ethnic differences," he added.

The ministry now has new judges in almost all major towns. Judges with connection to the ousted regime of Saddam Hussein are not allowed to rule.

This is good, but it needs to be free of US influence or interference as well.

BTW, I think there needs to be representatives ELECTED by Iraqis to draft their Constitution, rather than one appointed by us. If it is to be for the Iraqis, it needs to be of and by them too.

I dont disagree, but in the until that happens, they are going to need a helping hand. We need to make sure the Baath party does not come back to power. If we let that happen, that would allow the iraqi reconstruction to become a complete failure. This is going to take time.

Yep, time it will take. The trick is to do it ASAP. Staying any longer than absolutely necessary isnt going to help either side. The question is, how do you know for sure when that is? That of course, remains for the future.

It was years before Japan and Germany got to hold free elections. It will probably several years to get them back on their feet as well.
