So, would we have gained indepedence eventually without going to war, or did our independence pave the way for peaceful independence of the other British territories? OTOH, the track record for peaceful independence in the Americas in general is quite poor.

Decentralized American militia showed the brutal British Army that the inalienable right of secession was not to be messed to with. Unfortunately, that didn't deter Lincoln.

Since we had Generalissimo Washington, then yes that's true. However, had it been completely left up to the decentralized militia composed of the body of the civilians, then assistence from the French probably wouldn't have been necessary.

Generalissimo Washington greatly impeded progress as far as I'm concerned.

We celebrate this day to celebrate the people declaring independence from oppressive concentrated wealth and power - the sort the Republican party represents.

Since I live in MN my favorite holiday is the 4th. It is the only major holiday we get that usually has great weather. For instance memorial weekend up north was mid 60s this year. Easter was in the 40s, New Years started off around 40 and ended at 0 with 30MPH winds, god that was cold, Christmas, I think was in the teens or colder, Halloween in the 30s, and last Labor Day we got hosed as it was cold, I think in the low 60s with rain.

This weekend, well, today 95 and hot, tomorrow 87, Sunday 82, and Monday 85 😀

It's interesting how these 'tea party' types seem to think marketing themselves as terribly ignorant is good politics. I think it's dangerous in what it says about their real policies.
